Table Refinish

Okay..., the Mohawk did not work.
I've got some pretty bad white blemishes in the glossy salon table finish of my 340, that I made worse trying an iron and tshirt repair bit I saw on Youtube. I pulled the table top and took it to the local furniture refinisher, he won't touch for less than $700, says he could make a new one cheaper than refinishing the old one, he's worried stripping will mess up the thin top veneer.
I want to give it shot. Has anyone refinished their glossy salon table from an around 2000 Hunter? What did you use to strip? What did you use to finish, varnish, shellac? I tried the Mohawk restorer touted in previous threads, lots of it, just stunk up the garage. Also tried several polishes and rubbing compounds.
Thanks for any advice.

Mine did the same thing. I do woodworking and did not want to refinish the veneer table top. You have to be so careful taking the old finish off so I made a new one for my boat out of solid walnut.

I sanded all the finish off my salon table and then glued down and varnished teak veneer bought from a local supplier. Worked out pretty good. Pay attention to how the grain will lay out and match up. A tricky part was getting curves at the table corners right, but patience, a sharp blade, and careful sanding prevailed.

You do have to be careful wihen sanding thin veneer. Having said that, if you do strip it, I would use Epichanes Varnish. It's a fairly hard varnish, well suited to high traffic areas like your tabel and , if you recoat within 72 hours requires no sanding between coats.

I am just finishing up a cockpit table and it looks very nice.

Cheers

I had similar white marks on our table. I removed them with some fine steel wool. I did not get down to the wood but the finish was now uneven. I block sanded it between 5 coats of varnish in a satin finish. That leveled the surface and will provide years of protection. I'm very pleased with the results.
I did a test with a wet glass and no white marks now.
good luck, Bob

Bob, I like what you did, I'm going to try to repair it instead of completely stripping all the old finish. If it doesn't turn out, I can try to strip it then or do one of the other good ideas posted about installing a new veneer top. I'm not in any hurry, everyone likes all the room inside without the table top in the boat, and we always eat at the cockpit table when we're out the bay in the summer any way. Thanks everyone.

Good luck, I used a spar varnish on the table so I don't think I'll have any more white spots. I thinned it out quite a bit so it laid down nice and smooth in a satin finish. I think it matches the sheen Hunter has on the rest of the boats interior.

Do you know the stain color? I have 2002 356 and am trying to refinish the salon table.

Did you sand it down to bare wood ? The table top veneer appears to be oak stained to match the teak on our boat. I was afraid I could not match the colour so only sanded the white marks out and did not have to go all the way to the wood.

I'm getting ready to sand it down.. Hunter doesn't know what was used on a 2002 356, they said they used a wide array of products back then. I just want it to be a close match to the rest of the interior.

My table is a mess. I work in a millwork shop and am thinking Corian. I made a Corian cutting board to replace the one for the sink and it looks great.
