Tabernacle install o'day 22

Hi all,

I have removed all hardware from the boat and I am busily getting ready to re-bed everything. Have to remove all the silicone first - yuck!

Anyway, i have the stainless tabernacle which was previously bolted through the cabin top - i have heard that it should only be screwed in - but want to confirm. How is your tabernacle installed - is a screwed on tabernacle strong enough for regular mast raising and lowering?

If possible, through bolting hardware is almost always preferred to over screwed on hardware. It's stronger and for some types of sealant, such as butyl tape, which is preferred by many, you turn the nut to tighten, not the bolt.

No idea about the 22, but it's bolted through the cabin top on my 23.

No idea about the 22, but it's through bolted on my 192, and I think I remember pictures of through bolting on Joe Alvez's 222 "Trinkka" also.

If you can through bolt, I don't see how it could be a problem, unless you don't seal it well, and you'd have similar problems if you didn't seal lag bolts well...

I would bolt it, based on the experience of a friend of mine. He had a Catalina 22 and hte tabernacle was just lag-screwed to the cabin top (screws were into the wooden compression post below), one year when he tried to step his mast, those screws just pulled right up and out of the deck from the strain of pivoting the mast.

I know that on the DS II, if you are upgrading to a hinged mast (tabernacle is spliced into the original, "keel-stepped" mast) you need to pin the lower part of the mast (below tabernacle) to the original mast step to avoid having verything lift out when raising or lowering hte mast.

Bolt through is better. Get some cap nuts to cover the end of the bolt. I have a 74 O'Day 22 and the tabernacle is bolted through the cabin top. It is centered over the compression post, so the nuts and bolts are not in the way.

Thanks all. I will through bolt it. I hope to get it out this year yet. Lots of bedding to do.
