My ODay 272 has a 9.9HP Johnson outboard which is very difficult to reach in order to steer along with the(boat)tiller. With a previous sailboat I had owned this was not necessary; however the marina where I now dock is pretty tight which requires sharper maneuvering. I am told there is a product available for retrofit --some sort of bar or column that attaches from rudder to outboard to synchronize outboard movement with the tiller. Can anyone provide information on this product or guide me to a website etc?

Check your motor first.
Capnrx. I have a 9.9 Suzuki sail on my 25' Oday. It has a position lock so i can lock the motor straight ahead. You might check with a local dealer to see if your motor might have the same. With my motor location and the rudder design, i have no problem hitting the prop.

Hi Capnrx, I think you've received some clever solutions, but they sound to me like they're solving a different problem. Having sailed a Hunter 23 tiller boat with a 9.9 hp engine for several years, I understand your problem very well. When I backed out of my slip, I needed to turn my motor with my tiller -not to avoid hitting the prop, but - to turn more succinctly, sharply, and with better control. I've never seen any device that synchronizes the movement of the rudder with the motor, but it sounds like a great idea. I was following this post because I'm very curious to see how others might have solved it.

Rudder/motor link may be a let down for some?
I am just guessing that anyone who uses their motor as almost a side thruster for tight docking (I do) may not get enough travel when motor is connected to tiller. Rod might hit motor before it's turned enough? Maybe the rod is quick disconnect? Anybody know?

There are many ways to skin this cat and the knowledgebase covers some of them, most if not all cost less than $50.00.
