sym spinnaker question- pls forgive my ignorance

I am getting ready to experiment with using a sym spinnaker on an O'Day 23. The sail has a single "hank on" attachment an inch away from one of the clew groments, but not on the other clew grommet. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the hank on hook is? Thanks alot.

Pretty sure that is to allow one to use the spinnaker w/o a pole; kinda like an asymm. Tie one clew down - maybe on the anchor roller or bow eye; attach that one hank to the forestay to kinda keep that clew on centerline and a sheet (or sheets) to the other clew. Do a Google on asymmetric spinnaker use and you'll find all kinds of info. Good Luck!

Use it to hank the "tack" to the forestay, then rig a tackline so you can adjust the height of the clew. google "cruising spinnaker" or "asymentrical spinnakers" to learn about rigging and trimming.

It's more likely the previous owner used this sail as a "drifter". Light air sailing only.

Your answers make complete sense. I was just surprised to see this attachment on a sym as apposed to an Asym sail. Hope you all are having a great summer with lots of sailing!
