Has anyone taken their swing keel board off? Advice? Mine has a fair amount of play in it that i'd like corrected. I think it is responsible for a flutter that i feel at times. Since the boat is on the trailer and i'm going to paint the bottom and do some keel work, I thought I'd tackle this job as well. Pics would be awesome!

Thanks,
Brad

Well. I took the swing keel off. It was EASY . Although I had to buy a 1 1/8" socket, extension and handle, it was remarkably easy. I thought about replacing the uphaul and downhaul lines but they were in remarkable shape. I actually think the uphaul line is probably redundant since the swing keel has positive floatation. I guess if it were to get a hole in it and get saturated then perhaps it would be necessary. It will stay for now :D. The play I was experiencing in my swing keel was the result of wear in the pivot hole as I suspected. I am going to repair it with epoxy and use a piece PVC pipe as the bushing. Unfortunately my camera is on the fritz. I'll have to post pics tomorrow.

Cheers,
Brad

That is indeed great news for us rare centerboard H23 owners :) What I'm really glad about is that it can be done while on the trailer. Can't wait to see your pictures!

Thanks for the pictures! Sure does look like it's a straight forward process to drop that thing. In the photo that shows the top of the centerboard, what are the fore and aft holes for (center one being for the pivot bolt)? Is that where the control lines attach?

Cheers,
Brad

PS: The bolt access is on the Starboard side on my H23, not the port side like yours.. guess it doesn't matter and was left to the whim of the installer on duty that day :D Hopefully mine will come out just as easy and rust-free.

Yes, the hole on the right is the for downhaul line and the one on the right is for the uphaul line. There is one hole for each drilled along the edge of the swing keel to allow a knot to be tied.

Did you find these parts?

I pulled my swing keel last weekend because I want to try fix the keel vibration also. There is picture of these parts on my profile page with a few more words. They appear to made of nylon. I wrote Hunter to see if these might(?) be available. As much as I can tell the bolt hole in the swing wing was still round.

How did your PVC/epoxy repair go? Did it reduce the apparent wing freeplay?

Brad

PS I'll update you all on my luck repairing this thing.
