I have a 22ft swing keel sailboat. I was wondering if there was supposed to be a pin to keep the keel from swinging back up during a gust of wind?

Hi,
It depends on the boat. My Chrysler 22 did NOT have any retainer or pin and relied on the 825 lbs of iron to keep it down. I understand that Catalina 22's had some sort of lock-down devise.

I'm sure the Cat22 owners will elaborate for you.

I NEVER tried to lock the centerboard on my O'Day 23 down. There were many times on Nantucket Sound when I'd sail over a shoal, and the board would just swing up, with no damage.

Great answer MrUnix! That manual will answer justa bout any question an owner of a Laguna 22 will every have.
I have never seen an owners manual that explains how to sail, with as much detail as this manual does. Interesting.

Snow Driftin,

Let it soak with some penetrating oil, but this is only a friction lock, not a positive lock, and couldn't,(and not designed to), hold the keel up. Mainly used to steady the keel in the down position to minimize movement. Does your keel look rusty? I would bet the keel has swelled from rust and locked itself up.......
(you may have your work cut out for you  )

The keel lockdown bolt or wingnut was intended to lock the keel in position in the event of a knockdown or roll over. If the keel dropped into the inverted keel housing it would destroy the housing and keel mount.
I figured that rolling my C22 that was less of a threat than running aground in which case the lock pin housing would be wrecked.

My Hunter 23.5 has a swing keel that I agree would never be locked down.Accidental submerged logs, sand bars, ect could easily ruin a keel/hull.
