Swing keel winch upgrade

I just bought a 1974 Seafarer 24 swing keel and would like to know if anyone has upgraded the keel winch setup? At present the winch handle hits the cabin door ( Handle to long) and I can only get 340% rotation before I have to take it out and put it back in again. Mine has a square bronze shaft and handle has a square hole.

I owned a Seafarer 29 for 14 years and this model also had a keel winch. Mine was mounted on the bulkhead in the cockpit center of the main companionway entrance. I'm not familiar with the layout of the S24. Where is the winch located? Can you post a picture here?
