There is/was a centerboard upgrade for the H170. The improvement was weight. If I recall, the centerboard weight was increased by about 40 lbs. This hopefully made the boat less tender. Did anyone with a H170 upgrade to this centerboard. If so, did it help any? I have a H146. Any suggestions to modify centerboard to improve stability, without reducing speed substantially? Thanks, Paul

new weighted 146 centerboard?

Did Hunter tell you there was a new centerboard? Last year, they told me they would be coming out with such a thing for both 146 and 170. I don't have suggestions for the centerboard, but I do plan to get a sliding gooseneck - see the other post on this site - this would allow you to lower the boom, and therefore the center of effort, though none of us have reports on how it really affects the behavior. Hunter did suggest this was a suitable mod, though they cannot officially bless it. Their overriding story with these boats is always to eliminate having the boom konk the crew. Let us know if you have heard of any new centerboard. (As I recall, they were considering molding lead shot into the board during manufacture.)

Weighted center board

Yes, Hunter does have the up graded center board. A couple of us H.D.A.S.C. club members had the opportunity to compare the two center boards to each other, the old style and the new weighted center board. First of all, the weight difference was only 16 to 18 lbs that I recall. Secondly, the center of weight was not at the bottom of the center board where you would have expected it to be but higher up on the board, above the top half of the board length ! Still this is below the water line so........ every little bit helps. I think the old post is still avaiable on the "SAILING OBSESSION" web site.
