Just purchased a C25 swing keel and it is docked in a marina. Should the keel be up or down while docked? Have heard both. thanks, Brad

Swing Keel

Brad, We had a Macgregor 25 and whenever possible we would keep the swing keel down. The boat was steadier in wakes and it took the stress off of the keel cable. This assumes of course that you have enough water below to keep the keel from grounding. Marc P

Swing Keel Up or Down

I keep my boat on a dock and don't have the option to leave it down. I am of the opinion that a storm strong enough to knock it down without a sail up probably wouldn't leave much of the boat or dock regardless of the keel. You might ask catalinadirect.com that question. They have been very good in the past for answering questions. Good Luck and Happy Sailing! Jim

Stress and Keel Weight

Brad, I support Marc P's viewpoint. The weight of the swing keel should be supported by the keel pin...not the cable. That's also why we drop the keel into the v-block while trailering. Putting too much stress on the cable, whether from road bumps or wakes/waves while docked/anchored, can cause reduced life expectancy of the cable and/or damage to the winch or keel where the cable is attached. I say weigh the risks and make a choice. You will definitely need to check the depth of the water to assist in the up or down decision. Happy sailing! Brad s/v Worthless Crew
