Hi guys with H22's on trailers. Should I rest the full weight of the swing keel on the trailer and then snug up the outer supports to hold it upright --OR-- 'suspend' the boat on the uprights with not much weight on the swing keel?
When I get this done, I'll post pictures. Thank you.

Let the full weight of the keel rest on the trailer. Keep the boat upright by strapping the boat to the trailer.

It seems to me that if you have the full weght of the boat on the swing keel, which is resting on the trailer, there is a good chance of over stressing the pivot pin that holds the swing keel in place. Likewise, if you carry the entire weight of the boat and swing keel on the trailer bunks, the pin can still be overstressed, as can the hull.

I would suggest distributing the weight, so that the weight of the keel is carried by the center bunks of the trailer, and the weight of the rest of the boat is carried by the side bunks.

Hunter 22 on trailer

The Hunter 22 does not have a "swing keel." It has a center board which can be raised and lowered. You SHOULD NOT rest the weight of the boat on the board. You run the risk of damaging your board and the pivot point that makes it work. Let the weight of the boat be taken by the bunks on your trailer.

Thanks Gary! My inexperience is showing. Right here in the 1981 owner's manual it says I have a 'centerboard'. I took the boat off the trailer to modify the bunks for a better fit and the boatyard owner with "43 years experience" said sit her on the keel and then just snug up the stands to keep her upright. I didn't feel this was right because the centerboard just doesn't seem strong enough to carry the load. The newly re-done trailer holds the boat off the centerboard. Thanks again.

there are threads on this in the archive, at least for the 1981 swing centerboard. i don't know if the design changed. your problem sounds like much more than a centerboard problem, you have a hole in your hull. I suppose you can try dropping the centerboard and see if it is just leaking around the four screws that hold the centerboard in place, but i doubt they could leak 100 gallons a day. anyway, if you need some 1.5 " nyon dowel to cut a new nylon bushing for your centerboard, let me know, i have some excess. see my other recent reply in a similar thread.
