I have recently bought a 1976 Cat. 22. I need two do some work on the keel, I would like two recondition it. just from reading the responses two other peoples questions, I think I'm up to the job. What I would like to know is how to remove it while the boat is on the trailer, with out killing myself (I understand they are very heavy)? Tx Josh The boat yet to be named

A lot of Work

I just did the same thing. The pivot hole in my keel was worn beyond the size of the repalcement bushing. I brought the keel to a local machine shop that also did sandblasting. They cleaned the keel down to bare metal, machined out the pivot hole back to round, fabricated a stainless bushing, welded it in place and also weld repaired the large groove that had been worn in from the locking bolt. When I got it back, i first painted on the extend rust treatment, then a coat of apoxy barrier coat (the same as I used on the hull)apllied and sanded several coats of fairing compound, more barrier coat(4 coats) and 2 coats of bottom paint. I laso applied Catalina direct's anti klunk pads, they work great. I also put in a new pin, hangers, turning ball, hose and cable. After doing all that work, I could'nt see not using new parts, Hopefully, I won't have to do this ever again. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. Good Luck

Charlie: Repair Bushing?

Charlie: Does Catalina Direct sell the repair bushing? What is it made out of, Stainless? How tightly does it fit onto the replacement pin. What did your old pin look like? Was it worn or eaten up? Were there zincs on your keel near the pin? I know that the hole in my keel must be getting worn, but it never concerned me much. Thanks, Aldo

Who's the fairest

Fairing the keel is a good idea if you race. A 2 % difference in pointing and or boat speed will be very noticable. Over a mile it will be about 5 boat lengths. This is pretty hard to make up if your competition makes very few mistakes. If you are just cruising around, I wouldn't bother to fair, but do maintain your keel, pivot pin and cable in good condition.

Go For It

Josh: I did it last year along with a friend. Make sure you get the video and follow it. Also make sure your trailer is level and I mean level or you'll have problems getting the keel back in the fittings. There was recently an article concerning this in Main Brace. If you follow those steps you may get yourself in a lot of trouble and hurt yourself. Cat. Dir. has everything you need to do the job. Replace everything with the keel when you do this and then maintain it and you'll be in good shape. Like the other people said don't bother with the fairing, I did it and couldn't tell any difference, but I don't race so maybe it makes some difference there. Good Luck!

Just tok mine off

I just took my keel off last week using my Yacht club's hoist. In order to make replacement of the keel easier, I would recommend the following: Get 4 ea 6 inch bolts to run through the keel hangers up in to the hull's threaded holes. It is much easier to align when the keel is down and you can see what you are doing. Jack up the keel letting these four long bolts guide the hangers in to place. When the hangers are flush with the bottom of the hull, remove the long bolts one at a time and insert a new stainless hanger bolt and lockwasher and tighten it into place.
