I am looking to purchase a Catalina 22 and would like to know if the swing keel is as stable as the other types of keels. I will be using this boat on lake Ontario. Also what would be the upper limit on wind speed for this boat? Looking forward to all replys. Thank You

Swing Keel

good day, I have owned my Catalina 22 #81 since 1970. I have had no problems with the swing keel being unstable, it does move a small amount before the locking pin is tighten down. Once the pin is tight againest the upper part of the swing keel, I have found it to be fine. Besure that you lub the locking pin with waterproof grease, some water may come in at that point. on my boat the locking pin is at the water line, but with the grease no water comes in. One thing that is odd at first is the cable hum, but that can be fixed by loosing the cable. The hum is great as it is telling you you are going fast. I have had my boat in winds to 25 mph on the S.F. bay with no problem. I do have reefing system for the main and CDI furler for the jib. These items are a must here in the S.F. bay area. I hope this helps. Fair winds Al

Swing keel wouldbe fine

the swing keel will be fine. if you reef the mail, you can go quite nicely in 25 mph winds with good speed and stability.
