We are new owners of a 1982 catalina 22. On our second sail I noticed that the keel would not come up. Yesterday I dove underneath the boat and it appears that an O ring that the keel cable attaches to has broken. The keel is fully extended and the boat sails great. Fortunately we are in deep water slip. My question is this? Am I doing some type of damage to the boat by keeping the keel extended. Id prefer to defer the fix until after the summer is over as it will requre hauling and a fairly expensive repair. Has anyone else ever had this problem. Your assistance will be appreciated

I own a C22 swing keel. I have performed a lot of work on it, including replacing the keel cable. I know of no o-ring, and the attached Owner's Manual, section 4,7 does not show an o-ring either. I wonder if you could see clearly when you dove on the boat, if perhaps the keel cable is severed at the nicopress fork? Depending on your diving equipment, you could replace the cable while your boat is in the water. Look closly at the diagram in the manual. The cable MUST go on the AFT side of the turning ball, otherwise youl damage the hull. The cable attaches to the keel on a stainless fitting that is screwed into the keel. Catalina Direct sells cables, and buying their catalog is a good idea for C22 owners. Keep this on-line manual. the part that broke is a Stainless Steel eyebolt. You most likely will have to use one of two methods to remove it, drill and use a easyout to remove it or have an extention welded to the exposed part of the broken bolt. Its also possible you will have to have apply heat to the keel to remove it. This could turn into a machine shop project. The eyebolt can be purchased from Catalina Direct. As for waiting until fall, if it was mine and I had the slip I would sail while making the arrangments and picking up the eyebolt.

Should be ok
I don't see a problem with waiting. I leave my keel down all season on my mooring. When you pull the boat out just make sure it is well centered on the trailer for you want to make sure the keel slips into the rest. this winter you will have to lift the boat off the trailer so you can work on the keel. Check the archives, there are many meathods to do this. I replaced mine a couple years ago, go easy getting whats left of the bolt out, you can easily break it off and then have to drill it. John

Strap the keel
When you prepare to place the boat on the trailer, you may want to place a web strap around the keel at the level of the "O" ring you describe. The "O" ring is actually the fastening point of the keel cable. From this web strap you can fasten the keel cable and raise the keel enough to place the boat on the trailer. This temp fix can be done in the water while snorkeling on the boat rather easily. Once the boat is on the trailer, you're home free. Lift the boat off the trailer, fix the keel, scrub and paint the bottom, inspect the keel hangers and pivot bolt, stick her back in the water and have at it. Campy
