Yesterday while motoring out of the marina I heard a couple of thumps and thought I'd hit something underwater (not the ground though, since the water's too deep there). It turns out the swing keel on my O'Day 25 had come completely free of the boat and was banging against the hull and rudder, still being pulled along by the line that normally raises and lowers the keel. I couldn't pull the line up for some reason, either from the weight of the keel or the possibility that the line might be jammed somewhere. Has this happened to anyone else? What is the best way to fix the problem?

I have heard about one person completely loosing it. You probably can't pull it up because you have the full weight on the pennant now. Before you had a partial weight because it pivoted. My suggestion is to go to shallow water (3.5 to 4'), Then release the centerboard pennant. Retrieve the centerboard then have the boat hauled after the new parts come in. In the mean time order the parts from Rudy and sail the boat without the center board. It actually tracks quit well without the centerboard down. You won't race but you will sail. Second, Don't leave the centerboard down when you are not sailing. It just wears out that connection. r.w.landau

I believe that the connection is jambed in the pennant tube. I think the bumping sound is the boat moving opposite of the centerboard (the boat rolling back and forth and the centerboard not wanting to) Does this sound like it might be your problem? r.w..landau

Loose swing keel
R.W., The centerboard is definitely free of the boat. When the boat was sailing I leaned over the stern and looked down and I actually saw the centerboard waving beneath the water like a large fish, and it even banged against the rudder a couple of times. Somehow it just came completely loose and is still being held by the line. I might take your advice though and just remove it completely while I ponder how best to replace it. I would really prefer not to have the boat hauled out of the water if I can avoid it. Eric

How do you go about rerigging the centerboard? When I purchased the boat, the centerboard was in the down position and when I tried to pull it up and cleat if off, the line came completely free. Not sure how to repair this. Any suggestions? Jonathan Oday 25 "My Amy'

For this question. I know it has beed asked many times and answered many times. In fact I had someone e-mail a picture of the keel in the down position while on a travel-lift. I spliced a small thimble in a 1/4" polyester line. I dropped a messenger line (Braided mason line with a small nut for weight) down through the tube. Swam under the boat and pulled the messenger line to the surface where I then tied the new 1/4" centerboard pennant. Rember the tube is about 1/2 to 3/4" inside diameter. I pulled the messenger line until the 1/4 pennant came through to the inside of the boat. I then swam under the boat and connected it to the centerboard with a small clevis. (three attempts) The 1/4" line I used was about 10' long. I cut it off inside once every thing was connected. r.w.landau

A friend and I managed to remove the centerboard this Saturday, though the water was too murky to see much of anything. Nothing was attached to the centerboard except for the line that the previous owner used to raise and lower it. I'm wondering if anyone has a good diagram I can see to understand what parts go where and what I will need to re-order. I see Rudy sells centerboard parts at his place, but without pictures I'm not sure what exactly what I'm getting and where it will will go.

Eliminate the Wire.
And just use polyester line like staset. It worked fine but just don't use fittings that are too big, they will jamb in the tube. I think Rudy has eliminated the wire in his replacements also. Make a phone call to Rudy and tell him what you do have and let him fill in the rest. Besides that is the best way to get Rudy anyway. r.w.landau

Center Board Description
of my 1980 25ft Oday. On the bottom is a steel plate screwed into the hull, 2 screws on each side. The steel plate holds up a fiber glass triangle (wedge) and the wedge supports a 3 in. plastic rod about 1 in. in dia. This the hinge (pivot) allows the center board to swing up and down. I replaced the original rope and wire pennent with a 1/4 in. line and it has worked fine. Other years may work differently. Good luck to you!! The plastic rod has a slick feel to it, like soap.

That is correct.
The plates should be just about under the mast flush with the bottom of the boat. One on each side of the centerboard slot. This is where the front of the centerboard pivots. The line that you cut to release the centerboard, goes up through the tube just about where the galley sink is. Look at this also. You will see it is easier to drop a messenger line down through and use it to pull the centerboard pennant up through the tube than to try to push the centerboard pennant up. The tube starts about 10 to 12" up inside the slot in the rear. r.w.landau

My '82 O'25 has a rope only pennant. It has worked fine for the three seasons I have had it. I inspect it each spring while painting the bottom. I though my reply would be more specific to you because we sail the same water/conditions. Fair winds to all

Thanks Camelot. I'll be trying to replace mine before I put it in, but getting the board low enough out of the CB trunk might be tricky while on the trailer. Boy am I glad I read this thread. I went and checked my centerboard and sure enough one of the plates holding the centerboard is corroded and the screws are all messed up the heads are half missing. Trip to Homedepot for new stainless screws. Also got them a little longer since the thread seemed a little worn. Still got to dig to lower the board so I can paint it.
