and i have been grinding all the paint and i guess epoxy off. doesnt look too bad. but will have to re-epoxy and paint of course.. my question is about the pinion pivot hole.. anyone know how much bigger is the hole supposed to be than the pinion bolt. can you do some welding to make it a little smaller. then regrind or redrill the hole. what about welding some square pieces on either side of the keel, welding, then drilling a hole for the bolt. the boat is a 72 and looks like its seen some(alot)of use in the ocean, so there is rust on the keel that has to be taken off before doing anything with it..esp, the leading and trailing edges. not to mention the places where it looks like the keel has been hit by something. although i dont think thats the case, just rust wearing it away..for the most part the keel is pretty damn solid, just places like the hole and the edges that need any real work..

John is correct that you should contact Catalina. If memory serves me right, they have a solution to your problem. I know for sure they did for the Cat 25 which included spacers etc.

Keel Repair
Good Luck, We had Keel wobble also on our Catalina 22-common problem due to age. There is a machine shop near us whom we brought our keel to. He drilled out the hole,placed a bronze bushing/spacer and brazed it the keel. than machined the surface and the pin also.They now fit with no wobble. total cost approx.$125.00. We than had it sandblasted and re-painted. Alan & Eileen

Use West Epoxy As a Filler
West Epoxy, and probably others as well, adhere to lead. One thought is to drill a larger hole than required and fill with a thickened epoxy mixture. When the epoxy has set-up, redrill for the pivot pin. If you use the right thickener, you can make the pivot pin hole harder than the lead for less wear. You could also use some graphite in the epoxy mixture which could help to eliminate friction. West has manuals that spell out these procedures. It's pretty easy stuff to use, but you need to follow the directions. Good luck!

When I had our trailer sandblasted, the guy told me there was still moisture inside the metal that would come out. You could blast it clean as a whistle and prime it right away and still not eliminate creeping corrosion. Somewhere in the archives is a description of a mult-step treatment involving primers and compatible epoxy coatings that sounded on target. Can't relocate it again yet, sorry.

this boat hasnt seen any water for quite some time
trust me...my main concern is the pivot pin hole. a bushing sounds like the way to go and have someone who could do that for me. again after lots of grinding to get the paint and epoxy??off. i finally got to the bare cast iron.
