Is there a way to inspect the swing keel cable on a Cat 22 while it is in the water?

um.. what are u like trying to find out

on my 74 c-22, on the starboard side there is a place where the optional stove slides in and out, i can stick my head in there and see the winch that controls the cable, course i have mine on the trailer, but i figure if you have someone wind the cable up and down for you, you should be able to see the cable ok, with a flashlight, are u checkin the condition of the cable or what?? i am only assuming thats what ur after. but, to answer you question.. yes you can inspect the cable that way.

Thanks Tom

Yes, it is the cable that I want to inspect and the boat (Cat 22-1984) is in the water......the previous owner has owned the boat since '95 and has never changed the cable or piviot pin.... he put the boat in the water lowered the keel and left it lowered all season.....only concern is that I may not be in good shape and i sure don't want to drop a keel......thanks for your help and I'll see if there is an access to view the cable......

Dive or haul out...

I had a Macgregor 25 with a swing keel, and the cable broke at the loop, keel end. Looking at the cable around the winch didn't help, because the working end of the cable for about 6 inches is hidden. The crimps slipped on the replacement so I got to do it a second time, haha. I did find that sailing out to 10ft water was much preferable than laying in the mud in a slip!

replaced helsen 22 cable

My Helsen 22 had a swing keel. I scuba dive so I inspected it by just swimming down. It had several meat hooks and seemed rusty. It was then disconnected from the keel and the wire pulled up into the cabin. After the wire was replaced I fed the cable back through the hull and again dove to reattach it to the keel. It was a non-event as I have been diving for a long time. I would advise that you do it in deeper water to avoid stirring up a lot of mud. This replacement was performed in a lake with only a couple of feet visability. I couldn't replace the cable on the trailer as the cable attachment point on the swing keel was not accessible while the boat was on the trailer. The winch inside of the boat was very easy to inspect. Tom
