I purchased a Catalina 22 this fall. The last owner said he replaced the keel hanger, pin and bolts in 1999. I would like to replace the four keel bolts this spring. Do you think I will have a hard time removing them? The boat was sailed in fresh water. What is the best thing to do before I remove them, and what should I put on the new bolts when I replace them? Thanks Dale

bolts

It just so happens that I just did this not long ago on my own boat. I was expecting them to be torqued to 25 - 30 ft. lbs. I found them at more like 10 ft. lbs. They were dressed with nothing on them but came out without incident, was I lucky? No I don't think so as several other owners have seen the same results. I mostly sail in fresh water with at least two cruises in the gulf each year. I put in new bolts when I reinstalled the keel and I used blue lock tight on the bolts. My advise is to go slow when removing the bolts you can use PB Blaster on them as well, it sure won't hurt and will give you more lubricant between the two metals. Good luck
