As a SCUBA diver I know that getting under the surface definitely helps me if I am seasick. I have also seen it help many others in the same situation. However, bobbing up and down on the surface does not help and may even make things worse if you swallow any salt water. So, if you weren't planning on going beneath the surface then I wouldn't suggest getting in the water at all.
Some of the things that have worked for me include moving amidships to limit the up/down motion and avoid diesel fumes while hopefully catching a breeze, drinking water and eating something simple like crackers, watching the horizon, and trying not to focus on the being sick.
Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, you're just going to get sick. It happens to almost everyone eventually, including some of the saltiest dawgs I've ever met.
