hi i have a problem my best buddy likes to swim all the time, you never know when. he can't get back on the boat by him self as hard as he tries. murphy is a 92 pound lab. i have to climb down the swim ladder and pick him up by the coller while i hold the rail and heave him aboard. if i had a swim platform to stand on this would be easyer on the both of us. i was thinking of somthing made out of teak, has anyone had any experiance with making one?

He sounds like a great best friend!

I'd get a boat with a walk through swim platform. A friend like that deserves the best!

What type of boat do you have? If you have a walk thru transom, you could rig a 2X2 platform that hooks onto one of the rungs of your ladder and then gets supported on the bottom rung. This should put the small landing under water and allow your best friend to climb aboard. If you have a full transom, your friend will probably still have a problem even if you add a swim platform (not to mention scratching your paint job).

The old dog needs a new trick

I would look at adding something with flat rungs to your ladder - maybe getting a slight slope to it. We taught our dog to climb the ladder out of the swimming pool, which she now does without losing stride. You may still have to help it aboard, but at least you'll be rid of the big lift. My brother in law had a dog that would climb an extension ladder. He would join us on the scaffolding we were working on - too much. Because he didn't know how to get down the ladder and carrying him down was a pain, we finally had to lift the ladder up with us.

Murphy the pooch

Have you ever considered having Murphy wear a harness with a lifting handle? Hook it on to a block and tackle fastened to the end of the boom. A six part setup means you only have to haul 15 pounds plus whatever is the friction differential. This site may give you an idea or two.

Like Droop said,

go for the best. How about building a hydraulic lift gate. You know, a marine version of those truck lift tailgates. It would be well worth it and cheap at twice the price, what ever it costs.

Maybe this

This past summer we watched with amazement as a boat moored next to us had a large lab with them. The dog loved the water. To get him back on board the people had made a ramp, about 4 or 5 feet long?, that attached to the stern and was supported on the other end with some sort of floatation. The dog would go for a swim then go to the ramp, place front paws on the end which then submerged just enough for him to walk up the ramp and jump over the stern. He would then jump right back in and repeat the process. Might be worth a try.

When you are docked

How do you get your dogs on and off your boats when docked? I have wanted to sail with my lab but do not know how to get him on or off the boat easily. I think the ramp idea is a great idea and that you could also use it for the dog to get onto the pier when in a slip. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Ramp

I know Petsmart carries a folding ramp for getting dogs into trucks & SUV's. It would work for a small bridge as well. Believe I saw it at a West Marine too. Both have websites.
