I currently sail a McGregor 26, looking to upgrade to a Vision 32 for salt water coastal cruising (San Juans in Washington and British Columbia). Our island marina is limited to a 30' slip (no chance to upgrade) and I am thinking of removing the last 2 feet of the swim platform to fit. Realize the head bladder is under the first step, but could the final portion be safely removed or should I just look for a smaller boat? Thanks for your opinions. Wouldn't normally ask but I am truly enamoured with this particular model. John

Clarifying Question

I can't remember what a Vision 32's stern looks like. Does it have a chopped off stern like a Legend? If you chop off the swim platform, doesn't that cut into the hull? Are you prepared to do that major of a modification?

You must be nuts

Are you nuts...why ruin a nice boat? You'll screw up the hull, the underwater design and balance and have a horrible final result. We're talking major mods here and lots of money. Find a new place to dock it. or buy a Catalina 30.

In my veiw you have a couple of options,Check out other marinas Like Port Browning or Otter Bay,Or use a scraper and install a 0 instead of a 2.Good luck We sail A V32 89 you will enjoy the space.

Stern chop on Vision-32

Thanks for your input and please feel free to keep 'em coming. I first saw the boat in Vancouver a year ago ago and stopped dead in my tracks. Have to admit that I've kind of fallen in love with it but am concerned what a 2 foot chop would do to it's sailing balance. Near-free (C$300 per year) docking at the local marina comes with our house and I've been told that a larger slip is >5 years distant. Would like to trade up, but it looks like I should just be patient for another 5 years or so. Keep any suggestions coming, but I mujst admit that I'm not fond of the Catalinas' interior design (nice boat for the rest). Thanks for these speedy answers in any case and be assured that they will influence my decision. John

Consider another slip

I tend to agree with the "nutz" comment. But if you are intent on chopping up a perfectly good boat, consider how much that will cost (I'd guess at least $5000 (demolition, rebuilding hull, relocating rudder and steering, rebuilding holding tank, electrical, mistakes along the way). There must be a marina nearby that will make lease a sleep for a few years for less than that and allow you to keep the Vision intact until the local slip is available. FYI you will not be able to waterski behind the Vision. ;) Mark

find the biggest 30 you can and wait.

get a roomy 30- footer and wait for the larger slip. dont try to redisign a boat, the cost will be incredible and the results usually bad and you end up with a boat you cant sell when you want too.

Don't do it.

At first I thought you were talking about chopping off a real "swim" step, like one made of wood that is attached to the stern of the boat. With all of these comments, I guess you really ARE talking about chopping off the stern. Don't do it, unless you want to ruin a good boat.

Change location

Get a dinghy and a mooring or great anchor system. Would be cheaper in the long run then a slip and you can get any size boat you wish then.

2 foot overhang

What is wrong with having 2 foot overhang in the dock? it should not make that much od difference. John

I'm Convinced - it was a Dumb Idea

As if the universal advice to "not tamper" with a fine design wasn't enough, Mark's picture (reply #10) of a slashed Vision 32 serves as the icing on the cake. Yes, it actually WOULD look like my McGregor (gulp). OK folks. Common sense wins (my wife will never believe this). I'm still hankering after that model, but will bide my time until a larger slip finally opens up (~5+ years). Appreciate the responses and solid advice. You saved me from making a mess of things. My Marina

Allows 2' overhang. Now mine is a 37' in a 38' slip and I hang about about 1.5' but others for weeks on end hang out up to 6' (terrible docking) so you may be able to get away with it.

The diesel tank is under the . . .

swim platform on my 89' Vision 32. The holding tank is under the seat in the head. This would be a terrible modification, ruin the looks and resale value of the boat. The rudder might stick out, and you can't move it because of the prop location, not to mention structural considerations. It would probably be cheaper, and you might be much happier, to go ahead and rent another slip for the 5 years until a larger slip opens up at your marina.
