I have a baby on the way and an old hound that loves to swim. I figure a swim platform would be helpful and increase safety getting into and out of the dinghy. Has anyone taken no such a project? I have a machine shop that can do stainless brackets, and I'd like to make the platform out of a half-moon shaped teak grating. I'd welcome any advice/suggestions. The boat is an O'day 34. Thanks!

I would highly recommend...

..that you teach your new baby to learn to swim as soon as possible. I took my son to the YMCA when he was 6 months old. Babies have no natural fear of the water and will hold their breath when dropped in the pool. It's amazing to watch these little guys swimming before they can walk. He's now 22 years and loves the water.

swim lessons are in the plans

Thanks - I agree 100%. My wife and I were both competitive swimmers as kids/young adults, and we're definitely going to have our kids swimming early!

what kind of old hound???

i have a bassett (10 years old now) but she has never gone sailing with me... she was hit by a car during her younger days and sometimes 3 legs work and sometimes 4...so i didnt want to put her through stress...but maybe i should think again before it gets too warm (in the south) thanks for sharing she will not be going in the water... though.. she HATES baths!!!! how did you get your hound to love them thanks sailorhayes@hotmail.com

Not a hound actually - yellow lab

I was using "hound" colloquailly. He's a yellow lab, which would explain his fondness for the water. He'll swim all day if we let him. One time we were tied up at one of the Canadian Park Islands and another boat dropped one of their fenders while preparing to dock. Without coaxing from anyone he dutifully dove off the dock and swam out to retrieve it for them. Pretty cool to watch. Needless to say, he's quite the ambassador and we never think twice of leaving him home.

makes sense now!!!

labs are wonderful dogs.. my wife has one!!! your post makes so much more sense now!!! i was about ready to send you an application for the hound hall of fame because you found one that really likes the water it always amazes me that the dogs with such a keen sense of smell (and NO retrieving ability like your wonderful lab) want to smell so bad themselves must be a defense mechanism hope humans don't start the same idea... UGH PHEW!!!
