you will want as many steps as possible below the water surface to help you out. would recommend mounting as low as possible without the ladder dragging in the water when folded up. to understand importance of underwater setps, find a pool and try to raise your self up by using the highest step......

Access panel
Joe from MA. (or anybody who has done this), Where did you buy the access panel you and your friend put on the O'day 192? Do you have pics of it? I am in a similar situation, I need to modify my outboard bracket location and would like to add a swim ladder as well. Thanks, Joe from Ohio

Swim Ladder
I happened to be checking our winter cover and did some measurements to respond to your question. Our O'Day 23 has a 36" swim ladder mounted 15" from the water line and 12 from the rub rail. It seems to work well, althouh you have to 'weave' thru the stern pulpit. Sail on.

They are called Deck Plates
Joe from Ohio, They are called deck plates and West Marine sells them for about $18.00. I'm not sure where Walter bought his deck plate, but it was probably West Marine or Boat US before they got bought out by WM. Walter borrowed a large hole cutting saw and a single speed electric drill from his son in-law to cut the hole for the deck plate. I wish I'd have known that the drill only had a single speed, because I'd have let Walter use my variable speed 1/2" drill. You see;--If you try to cut the hole in the Fiberglass with a single speed drill, it could screw up the hole, so you need to run the drill in reverse. I think that this makes more dust than if you ran a variable speed drill forward and slow. Anyway Joe, I have a link to the deck plates in the West Marine catalog. Check it out. I think that it's a good way to go. I'm going to need to replace my self bailing hose, and it's a bear to get at. Not only that, but I'm afraid I'll get stuck inside that cockpit hatch trying to get at it.
