Swim ladder

We have a 1986 Capri 18 and I would love to add a swim ladder to it. I was on Catalina Direct and they have one I love. Can we just bolt this onto the transom or should the transom be reinforced somehow? The boat came with one of those ladders that hook on the side and I hate it. There really isn't any good place to hook it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

Presuming you can get to the transom, and presuming it's laid up similar to the Capri 22 transom (about an inch of solid fiberglass/resin), then yes, you can bolt to the transom. You do need to use large backing plates to help spread the load, though. And you may find that you have to cut through from the cockpit and then put one of those round access ports in the hole when you're done.

See what they did if you have a motor mount and replicate that, only beefier.
