Thanks to everyone for the advice, pictures, tutorials, etc. I was very careful before starting my engine, and it paid off. It had been sitting for 2 years, and i wasnt exactly sure of its condition. I am restoring a '86 40' Hunter that partially sank. I am almost complete now--a year later! The engine purrs like a kitten! I am so surprised at how smooth she runs. I expected coughing, sputtering, choking, bad idle, stalling, etc. But she starts up on the first lick, runs through the whole throttle range, and not a sputter! Idles perfect! I need to replace the stop cable though, she didnt want to stop. i had to smother the air breather as my water bucket was emptying so fast. The exhaust water was pouring out the side of the boat like niagara falls!

One question though: There is a small threaded pipe on the back of the engine that is just below the heat exchanger, it obviously is missing a hose of some sort as it pours water into the bilge. it is not one of the drain cocks for the coolant. it is raw water. when i block it, water discharges from the side of the boat out of the exhaust. when i dont block it, it pours in the bilge. its maybe a 1/2" pipe sticking out. anybody have any idea what this is and where to hook a hose to what?

Oh, i have the 4jhe 44hp yanmar model.

thanks so much for your help! I just went from a $20k boat to a $70k boat in 30 mins!

Raw Water to Exhaust Elbow

That sounds like the water outlet from the heat exchanger .. It should be connected to the exhaust elbow. The muffler and exhaust hose will overheat in a few minutes if the water is not flowing through the exhaust.. Here is what the connection looks like on the 3 GMF. It is the small hose out of the back of the heatex that connects to the ell fitting on the silver exhaust ell at the very top of the picture. In the brighter picture, it is on the left . The hose goes through a vented loop that is set above the waterline, then into the exhaust ell. Here is a helpful link to your engine's service manual that shows the hoses and stuff.. Sounds like ya done good !!!

Claude...

What's the red pump thingy to the right of the air intake nozzle? AC raw water pump? Hot tub fill? Where's your Racor hiding?

Also, is the hose off your engine raw water intake thru-hull shown in the pic just beyond the pump thingy?

Dan, Yup.. That is the AC raw water pump.. I don't have the RACOR installed yet (it is in the cabin awaiting installation) but the primary filter is aft under the ledge, kinda starboard of the packing gland. The thru hull that you note is the AC raw water and the sink foot pump.. If ya look on the other side of the shaft log, you can see the reinforcement pad for the engine raw water thru hull.. Note.. probably not a good place for the AC pump because in the summer, the temperature in the engine box will get hot enough to trip the thermal breaker in the motor.. I have to put a little ice on it to get it running.. I am going to put a blower on the box this year to suck the hot air out of the engine compartment.

Thanks for the reply, Claude...

If your "primary" filter is a bronze Perko unit, I would get rid of it ASAP. It is basically just a water separator with no filtering action. When I redid my fuel system a couple of years ago, I found that thing loaded with black gooey stuff that was breaking loose and cloging my Racor. After polishing the fuel, replacing the filters, and cleaning up the fuel line runs, haven't had a bit of trouble since.

My Racor hangs just above where your AC pump is. That also should be moved at your earliest opportunity. I get readings above 140 degrees in the engine box after several hours of motoring. Can't help your cooling efforts! I have a 4" blower to install to vent the heat but haven't gotten around to doing so yet--still trying to figure out where to route the exit hose--am thinking of a vent somewhere near my feet at the helm for early Spring/late Fall use.

My engine raw water intake is the one on the port side of the shaft log, which is why the question. I don't have one on the starboard side. My hull number is 113--is yours an earlier or later number?

Mine is a 1986 Hunter legend 40. I guess you are refering to the first three digits of the HIN? HUN401......

My intake is forward of the engine midships in the bilge. let me know if you need other info.
