One of are shrouds has a bent swage stud that screws into the turnbuckle on one side and is swaged to the 1/8 wire on the other end.

Can you use the handheld swage tools like the ones sold here to swage the new stud to the wire? or is there a better tool? or better to have a pro do it?

have it done. The folks that made the tools do not recommend them for life lines let alone standing rigging.

As Steve says, the hand swedges aren't strong enough for rigging use.. Couple of options remain.. order another shroud with fittings or use the compression terminals like Norseman or Sta-loc or Hi-Mod fittings which fit on the end of the wire and a compression thimble holds the wire securely. Most are available with a little more length so that when ya cut off the old stud, the new one is long enough to have the same length for the turnbuckle.. They are a bit complex to install correctly, so depending on your wire rope skills, a new shroud may be a better choice.. This site has some fittings:

and I think that new shrouds can be ordered as well.
Good luck..

There is a lot of loading on the shrouds. Never swage yurself as it will not hold and you may loose a mast. Open the wallet and spend to have it made. You will need to send trhe old one as it is a guide for the rig shop. You will need to advise to keep the same length or shorten it.

I used a Hayn removable stud on the lower end of my forestay, matched to the furler drum threads. It takes a bit of care to fit the unravelled wire rope to the fitting/cone, but it is feasible for anyone who is somewhat handy. It isn't too much more money than a professionally swaged fitting, and I saw some good reviews. So far, for the one season it was on, it has worked fine.
