88 Suzuki dt6 long shaft, are they a decent motor. I'm trading a Honda 7.5 short shaft that I can't use

I had that motor and found parts prices were times two that of my equiv Yamaha. Also many were unavailable or had to wait until a batch was manufactured and shipped from Japan. It ran well until the con rod bearings failed and those parts were unavailable. By comparison I could walk into any Yamaha dealer (motorcycle, snowmobile, marine - didn't matter) and have any part in two to three days. My Yamaha was also a 1988 model.

OK, thanks for fast response, I'm currently running a 15hp on my Mac 24' and it's heavy and pulling tongue up while hauling, it's either move axels or find a different motor. I have the honda which is sitting doing nothing or the evinrude that's heavy and is great but more than needed and this guy's ready to deal now

Did I read that correctly? You have two outboards? Have you considered selling them both and getting yourself a nice new Tohatsu 6 hp long shaft? For example, there is a 1989 15 HP Evenrude on eBay right now selling for $650. If you could get $1000 total for your two existing outboards, you would only be about $200 short for a brand new O.B. You might even be able to do better than that depending upon where you live and come out even with a brand new O.B.

Something to chew on. I like to go on the cheap and try all kinds of DIY things to keep my boating on the low budget side... but having a reliable O.B. that starts on the first pull (or is electric start) is such a peace of mind thing for me.... When the sh!t hits the fan, you want to be able to fire up the iron genny and get going....I'll spend money on my O.B. if there is anything wrong with it. My two roughest days cruising went bad when the O.B. started acting up. ...

Yes have two, electric start 15 which is great but heavy, tongue of trailer lite, and 7.5 honda which is super
great but shaft too short! Honda all original except water pump, tool kits and tank in all, pretty cool!

I guess the real question is are they reliable, never owned one
A lot depends on how it was maintained and used. If it's not used all season, how was it stored? If not fogged and stored around the freezing mark then it may have rust on the cylinder walls and bearings. That's what did mine in.
It's a lot like cars - you can find somebody with a gem and another other person with a lemon.
But for me the high price and lack of many parts would be a deal breaker.

The poster who suggested selling the two working motors and buying a new Tohatsu 6 hp has the best advice.

For that Mac 224 the 15 is way overkill anyway.
I had a Mac 26D and my Honda 9.9 pushed her at about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle most of the time. My little Honda 2hp for the dink could push her okay in a pinch. Yes I did move the axle back to eliminate the sway even with the 9.9.

In general they are as good as Honda and Yamaha but do not have the service and parts availability here in the US as the other two. Take into consideration that motor is going to be 30 yrs old shortly. On the other hand, you need a long shaft and what good is the Honda if you cannot use it?

Last year I purch. 1985 DT6LF Suzuki to replace the Honda 9.9 as I wanted less weight. Now on my 2nd season the motor has been great. The common parts such as water pump, fuel pump, and carb. rebuild have been easy to get and prices competive. Power is as much as I want or need and will push my Oday 222 at hull speed into a 15 knot wind with sharp waves. (have to cut back speed). The only 2 neg. are that it uses a little more gas and of course it must be mixed and the 2cyl has a buzzier sound to it. As motors go Ive used and rebuilt a lot of 2cyl chain saws and have found that the motors I used with the 50 to one oil mix have had "dry" bergs.r I use a 35 to 1 and name band oil. Im sure that in normal conditions the 50 to 1 will work but not much of a buffer if a lean run or a short over temp happens.

Glad to hear that you've had good experiences with your Suzuki. I purchased a Suzuki 9.9 4-stroke last summer as well. I haven't had any problems with it but then it is only a year old. I did experience quite a bit of vibration the first time I used it but after balancing the propeller it runs smoothly.

Thank you, I have and use a 15 hp two stroke that I don't think is too noisy, no 4 stroke but not bad, is the 6 hp about the same as I've heard some smaller motors that don't exhaust into the water and are terribly noisy

Keep in mind that some places will not allow 2-stroke outboards. Before you invest the money make sure that the lakes that you plan to use it will allow them.

Where do you sail? If you are sailing on inland lakes, I would suggest getting rid of both motors and going with a 24 volt trolling motor. Should be able to push that boat at 5 mph. Very light weight, and starts every time. I switched out to a trolling motor last year, and its been one of the best changes to the boat I've made. Much better control at slow speeds. Easy for the wife or kids to "start" it if I were to ever become incapacitated. Makes the transition from sail to motor much smoother. And it will ghost along quietly on those days with no wind.

I thought about that, but we spend several days out at times and worried about getting back, no not life threatening because we are inland but I just hate bothering others for my mishaps. Kids involved so we have power usage always
