I'm looking for a new outboard for our dingy. Found some good prices on Suzuki 4HP 15". Wondering if anyone has any input, good, or bad, on the make/ size
My experiences with Suzuki engines have been horrible.
*Had a 75HP on a center console and it was the worst OB motor I ever owned. Utterly unreliable and completely trouble prone. Far too many problems to even list..
*Our yacht club bought two Suzuki's for our junior sailing program. They have been the most problematic engines in the entire fleet, as well as the newest (though one Merc and one Suzuki were just replaced with two Evinrude's). Honda's have been the most reliable in that fleet.. We have Evinrude, Honda, Suzuki, Mercury & 1 Tohatsu in the fleet. We don't have Yamaha's as folks on the board always want a "deal" and Yamaha does not "deal".
*My brother has a Suzuki 6HP (same as the 4HP) that is riddled with peeling paint & carb issues. Thing looks like it is 30 years old and it is less than three. Suzuki would not stand behind it at all even under the "gimme three" warranty..
*I have a customer with a 2.5 and it was so bad he had to get rid of it. Every time it was placed into gear the POS shear pin design would fail. Idle was set as low as it could go. Dealer could not solve issue, I could not solve issue Suzuki could have cared less. It often failed and took out the aluminum prop hub too thus destroying a $35.00 prop three to four times per summer.. Carb would not stay clean and required constant fiddling. Throttle cable rusted solid in one season....
If you want a "reliable" OB then go Yamaha.....

The Nissahautsercurys (Nissan, Tohautsu and small Mercury's are all identical motors buy on price or local dealer support.) They are better than Suzuki, in my experience, but are also pretty prone to carb issues... (with ethanol I think all motors can be prone to carb issues)
I bought a Mercury a few years ago and it $hit the bed in the first four hours. West Marine took it back, no questions asked. I was sure glad I had bought it at West Marine... The Yamaha I replaced it with has started on a partial pull every time, even first start of the season.
Just my personal experience and .02...
