Just had a survey on my 2000 Hunter 420 and wondering if anyone else has had any of these problems? First is that they are saying there is a crack around where the winged keel is attached and the bolts could be rusted thus allowing the keel to fall off. I noticed only a seam where it probably attached but no cracks. Second is that the shaft bearing and at the prop there is a slight bit of movement but no vibration from the engine. And third is there is a slight bit of play in the rudder. I have bottom painted twice and sailed the boat 8000 miles from Jacksonville FL. to the Sea of Cortez. I am the second owner and by the way I was asked if the boat had a swing keel before we hauled out for the inspection. I there something wrong with this survey?

Maybe. I don't think I would pay much for a surveyor who asked if a H420 had a swing keel. When he suggests the keel may fall off, it's time to graciously thank him and fire his ass. If that were true, every Catalina ever made would be sunk.

It sounds like the only things he picked up were the blatantly obvious. A strut bearing with a small amount of play isn't surprising with 8000 miles on the keel and it's probably worn appropriate for this use. Hunter specs for play in the rudder shaft are similar to all other manufacturers - that is, an acceptable amount of play is expected and common in all boats. If it increases over time, it's replace the lower bearing time.

Problem solved, I contacted Hunter customer service and Keel fix is to check bolts and grind out crack and refil, no big deal. Shaft bearing is normal could be replaced but neccessary at this time. Rudder comes from factory with 3/16 play and will wear a little more, again no need for replacement. Surveyors on boat don't really know any specific brand and they are paid to find any possible thing they can, makes them look good. With out checking for my self would have lost sale and cost thousands.
