Hi- I am looking for recommendations for someone to do a pre-purchase survey on a 1990 Hunter Vision 32. (for those not familar with the Vision, it has an un-stayed mast similar to the Nonsuch, some Freedoms and the Wyliecat) I'd like it if the surveyor would be interested in attending the sea trial as well. Also looking for someone to do an Engine survey on the Yanmar 3GM30 engine in the boat... I know the broker will have his recommendations, but I'd like some random(?) 3rd party input from folks on this list Also, does anyone have any "lessions learned" from hiring or participating in a marine or Engine survey? Thanks!

Couple of things to check, Tom..
..engine water flow (the mixing elbow can coke up when run at low RPM, or short periods, typical of San Diego). Also check the vacuum break. They leak. Check the water and holding tanks. Some were subject to corrosion on the seams. Look for port leaks. Other than that, just typical used boat stuff. The rig is pretty bullet proof. Sometimes the sheaves get tired. I had one for nine years. Loved it, and I'm sure you will too. Rick D.

I used Bill Fox from Frank K. Wyatt 619-223-8187 surveyors. They've been in business for over 40 years and really know their stuff. He is a surveyor who works for YOU, not the broker or seller. Very attentive and knowledgable. I did the mechanical/engine survey myself as I used to be a Coast Guard engineer. W'eve had the boat for 2 years now, and the survey was pretty much spot-on. Good luck!

One more recommendation is Lester and Lester Marine Survey. They've been around San Diego for a long time as well and will perform various levels of inspection. 619-224-2944. Regarding the lessons learned, there are various certification agencies for surveyors. If you are doing the survey for insurance purposes make sure they are certified by an agency your carrier recognizes. There are a few good books on surveying, such as "Surveying Fiberglass Sailboats" by Henry C. Mustin, I picked my copy up at Borders and Books. The benefit to reading it was it allowed me to give the boat I purchased a quick once over and then ask the surveyor the right questions. Fair winds Frank S/V Lazy Dogs SGYC

I spoke with Mr. Fox, the fellow from JW Marine and also Kells Christian From Christian & Christian. All were without a doubt some of the most helpfull and knowldgeable folks I have run into! Now we just have to get ourselves to San Diego in time to attend the survey, make the final discussions and we should be Vision 32 owners!
