Surprise! The engine just quit

We were motoring up the river yesterday when our engine suddenly quit. It re-started easily, and ran for the rest of the day.

I do not like this type of mystery. The engine is a Yanmar 3GM30F installed in our 1986 Hunter 34. Is this incident a wake up call of some sort? Where should I start my investigation?

Thanks for your collective help.

well once a diesel is running the only things that stop it are turning off the fuel or the air (assuming you didn't catch a line or net of something and the prop just plain stopped turning).

So as in all things diesel engine - check your fuel system (leaks, clogged filters, water in the separator) as it is going to happen again. Start by checking your separator to see if it is full of water and/or gunked up.

I would replace both fuel filters first. We just got back from the BVI's and this was a similar symptom on our generator.

It restarted but quit again in an hour or so. They came out and put in a new filter and it worked like a champ for the remainder of our visit.

If this does not work you will need to do some searching.

Would bet on an air bubble in the fuel line. Check and tighten all your hose clamps and be sure the engine filter ring is fully tight. Check on the bleed screws as well. Lastly, change your primary fuel filter (Racor or other).

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is to check the vent line on the fuel tank.

Good luck,
