Supports / Shipping Cradle

I've decided to have V2933 shipped to my house. I haven't been able
to do any work because of the constant rain we have had. Once at the
house, I can tent it, plus have instant access to it. I will have to
support the boat in some way, once it is at my house. If anyone has
plans/method other than the two mentioned here, please contact me.

I have seen two methods of holding the boat up. "The Vega Handbook"
shows one method. Something along these lines are what I'm most
likely to build. It is hard to make out some of the details on my
copy. It looks like the plan shows lengths in feet and inches? I
would have expected meters. Or am I reading the numbers wrong? On
the left side of the page, there is a close up of something. I can't
quite make out what that is supposed to be showing. I think it has
something to do with the small support that appears to be attached to
the top of the upright and to the support block under the keel. Or
do you think it is attached to the other cross support?

The other method is the shipping cradle, by Pierce Reed, shown in the
AVA's "Owner's Repair & Maintenance Manual". This is probably
overkill for my purposes. However, since I haven't talked to any
transport services yet, it may be something that is required. If
anyone has contact information for him, please email me. Here is
what my questions would be.

I can make out most of the drawing, but I can't make out how the
uprights are fastened to the base. It appears from the drawing that
nails are driven through the sides and into the base. Is this
correct? Everything else about the cradle seems solidly attached
with screws. I don't think I'm understanding that attachment
correctly.

The upright supports lay against the outside of the 4"x4" that goes
across the bottom of the cradle. Is there a reason not to extend the
lengths of the 4"x4" that go across the boat (lay on the ground), so
that the 4"x4" that lay on top, along the sides of boat, could be
moved outward, so that the uprights could rest on the inside of the
4"x4"?

Did you have to notch the 77" long, 1"x4" boards, that cross each
other on the sides? Or were they long enough that they bend around
each other?

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris;

the simplest method to hold up the boat are four stands like they use
in marinas. I can
make a couple of pictures from the ones they use in the marina where I'm
having my boat
and sent you the pictures.

Wilhelm,

Thanks for the response. I know what stands you are talking about. I
actually own 7 Brownell boat stands. I bought 7 because the storage yard
requested that many. However, they are currently holding up V265. Once
V265 gets shipped to its new owner, I can get my boat stands back. The
stands are expensive, so I don't want to buy 4 more, that I won't need,
after V265 is gone. So I was looking for a cheaper, semi-temporary,
solution until I get my boat stands available.

Dear Chris,
We rent our jackstands from a local marina so that we don't have to have them
sitting in our yard all summer long. You might want to look into that option.

Hi Chris;

thanks for your e-mail. My "I'm no longer..... " pertains only to
monetary matters. I'll be
more than happy to give advise or any other help about a Vega, after all
I own my boat
for a very long time and have repaired, maintained and babied her a lot.

Good luck with your Vega.... Wilhelm, V-258
