Hello,

I own an Oday superswift. The metal hardware that attaches the rudder to the transome has broken and I need a replacement. The part that broke is the "lip" that holds the bottom part of the hardware on the rudder down so that it will not float up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Super swift pintle and gudgeon

Rebecca,
I'm not sure of which part that you are referring to. The rudder on most sailboats of this type including my O'Day 222, has two pintles which resemble pins with straps that fit into two receiver type plates on the stern of the boat, called gudgeons. If one of the pintles on the rudder is broke, you may be able to take it off and either try to match it up at your local sailboat supply, or maybe bring it to a Marine metal fabrication shop and have it welded. If it's a broken gudgeon on the stern of the boat, I'm not too sure that the bolts and nuts on the Super Swift are accessible. My neighbor across the street had a Swift with two broken gudgeons on the stern, and I looked at it and wondered how you could get at the nuts to the bolts that held them on. That doesn't mean that it can't be done. I just didn't bother to take the time to look it over good that day. The people were moving away and wanted to give the boat away rather than take it with them. If it turns out that you are in need a gudgeon, or you need to remove it to have it welded, you may be able to get at it by removing the rub rail around the boat. You could also trailer the boat down to the marine welder and have him look at it. Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine has all of the O'Day sailboat parts listed right down to the Widgeon. The Super Swift isn't listed on his site, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't carry some parts for it. You could give him a call and ask him about what I have just covered. It's very possible that the hardware for the swift was supplied by Dwyer or Schaeffer. So you can check this out as well. Maybe someone on this forum who has a Super Swift will chime in and provide you with the information needed to get you back on the water with this fun boat. I hope that I was able to be of some help here. Good luck!

Super Swift Rudder set up

Rebecca,
Check out the "I Love O'Days" web site for pictures of the Super Swift under their "Models Info" heading. Apparently some of the O'Day Swifts had a completely different rudder configuration than the pintle and gudgeons that I described. I'm not sure if these are still available, but you could check with someone like Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine and ask him.

O'Day Super Swift rudder

Rebecca,
Check out the "I Love O'Days" web site for pictures of the Super Swift under their "Models Info" heading. Apparently some of the O'Day Swifts had a completely different rudder configuration than the pintle and gudgeons that I described. If you have a similar rudder set up as what is in this picture, I'm not sure if these are still available, but you could check with someone like Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine and ask him.
