JC, we spent seven weeks around the...

Discovery Island Group this past summer. Our best sail, a ten, was when we crossed the Strait of Georgia from Smuggler Cover to Nanaimo about thirty miles. We were on a beam reach starboard tack in 15 to 18 knots of wind in five to six foot seas. Belle-Vie clipped along at a steady nine knots all the way with about 20-degree heel. The admiral left a permanent bend in the helm guard where she hung on for dear life. I'm still picking bugs from between my teeth. Terry

Terry: 7 weeks? I sure envy you.

How many of you were on this 7 week cruise? Just the 2 of you? We will have to wait until we are both retired in a few years in order to be able to take a real long cruise. We are putting together the detailed plans for circumnavigating Vancouver Island, and up the inside passage to Alaska. We are going to throw away the calendar and watch, sort of speak. Of course we won’t, since we have to watch for weather, tide, and such. The Strait of Georgia is a nice long run when the weather is right. We have had some good runs in the past, but once we were caught in a real stink, with green water over the bow, and got knocked around quite a bit. Sure was nice to finally get to Naniamo.

The Green Flash

All of these sailing sunsets – great. But has anyone seen the green flash? Story goes that just as the sun disappears below the horizon the orange red light suddenly changes to green, something to do with the prismatic effect of a humid atmosphere above a sharp horizon. Any pictures?

Green Flash

Seen it many times when I lived in Hawaii. My understanding is it can only be veiwed over a clear horizon over water. Just as the top of the sun dips below the horizon you get the middle of the light spectrum for just an instant.

the green flash

I do believe in the green flash but I've never seen it. If anyone has a photo of it I'd like to see it. The horizon in the lower end of Lake Huron tends to be hazy so the green flash may be obscured here. Has anyone seen it anywhere in the Great Lakes region? Mike
