My wife was feeling industrius this weekend and remade our hatch cover which was torn. The Sunbrella looks real nice(we got a great deal on it)but the hard part remains. How do I put the snaps on so they line up with the bases already fastened on the boat? Any easy ways of doing this? Thanks P.S. She even made a bimini cover. I felt like asking for winch covers also but I felt I should leave well enough alone Paul H S/V Linda Belle 95 H26

Hatch Covers

Place the canvas over the snaps. Using a crayon or pencil, lightly rub the area over the snap. It will reveal the spot where you place the snap on the new canvas.

cover patterns

Hope this isn't a dumb question but is there somewhere to get patterns for hatch covers, biminis, winch covers, etc?

Hatch covers

There are snaps with a nail protruding outward. Place these in the base snaps nad push the fabric over thr nails. Perfect allignment for the snaps.

Snaps

We've done a lot of this. This year we made a skirt around the cockpit. If you're using the standard female snaps, be advised that the plier-type tools you buy at places like West marine are not the best. The hammer & pin (I can't remember what that's called) type can be a pain too, because thet don't separate the stud well. What I do is start with the plier-type because it separates the stud, then knock it down with a hammer & pin (or whatever it's called). You can knock it down pretty hard if you use the backing plate that comes with the set.

What did you sew with

Sounds like you guys have been making some items that have been on my mind for some time. What did you sew the Sunbrella with a home sewing machine or something special? Brian

Sewing Machine

Brian, She used a Singer machine with a heavy duty needle. I believe it was a #118. If the needle is rated for denim it will work on Sunbrella. It took her a while to get the hang of it but once she got going it was done quickly. Need a large space for laying out the material though. We folded an 1 1/4" hem around the edge and then hemmed it pins. Now we just have to take the finished covers down the lake and install it on the boat. Fabric Warehouse(they are on the web) has a great price on Sunbrella seconds. We examined the material when it came in and could find no flaws. Paul H S/V Linda Belle

Pablo,

When I read your post, I read 'dirty needle'. Had to do a double take. What's that say about our times or my line of work? (retired police)

Ebay

Ebay usually has numerous listings with some pretty good prices on sunbrella. I just did a seach for "sunbrella" on ebay's main page and came up with 5 pages of sunbrella listings.
