I'm about to order sunbrella fabric to have a new bimini and sail cover made for my 1989 30' Hunter. Sunbrella shows two colors of navy -- one is called Captain Navy, and the other is just called Navy. I need to know which of these is likely to be the original color used by Hunter when my boat was made. Anybody know?

Navy?

"Pacific Blue" is a very popular color, but a lot of Hunters come with a darker color that is closer to a "Navy" blue. My understanding is that the darker the color of the sail cover/bimini, the longer it and/or whats under it lasts.

Hunter Navy

If the Sunbrella is dark, then it is Navy, not Captain Navy. That has been a standard for Hunter in the past several year. If it is lighter, more like a royal blue, then the Sunbrella color is Pacific Blue. Hunter was using that color on many of the boats in the 80's.

Captain's Navy

Captain's Navy is a slightly lighter in tone than 'Navy', with a tiny bit of a bluish-purple cast. (We had our dodger and bimini made from this color on our '89 H-30.) Captain's Navy appears 'richer' and has more depth than navy. If you see the two side by side you will see that the Navy appears 'flat.' It's all personal preference, however. ;^) Pacific (or Catalina) Blue is much brighter, like a Carribean Blue. SailRite will send you generous samples, or go to a sail maker if there is one nearby to see each one. You can also get a color swatch sampler from Glen Raven mills in NC.
