My Wife and I just bought a Catalina 25 that has two Lewmar brand portlights forward. On the inside is a plastic trim ring for each around the port each has become sunstained brown. There are NO replacemets available from Lewmar. I have tried the following products to clean off the brown: Simple Green, SOS pads,Clorox,Orange Clean,Westleys belche white, and Oxy Clean. I have run out of ideas. Anyone know of replacement parts source or a better cleaner? Thankss for your help! Alan 87 Catalina TR/SK

Catalina!

Alan: Everyone with a Catalina brags about the availability of Cat. part directly from Catalina. You should be able to get replacment parts directly from them. They supposedly have them for 30 yr old boats. They also have a catalog of available parts.

take em off

i removed the plastic covers on my 30 foot catalina. it gave the boat an industrial port look that i really liked. it is kind of a no b.s. look. if you think about it, they really don't do anything and are kind of a nuisance. rt

Thank You!!!

Thanks for your Information, I had not thought of Calling Catalina! Westleys Bleche white seems stronger than lemon Juice as the product Information says wear rubber gloves and dont inhale. Currently the trim ring rings have been off and it DOES have that industrial look. Sailnet called Lewmar and they stated that Lewmar has no replacement parts-very interesting. But for $167.00 each I could buy new Port Lights. I am going to try Catalina Thanks, I will let you know! Alan 87 Catalina 25 TR/SK #5612

Last resort... simple, yet it might work

I used Barkeepers Friend and Zud to clean the stained bottom (brown) of my dinghy and it worked really well with a "scrubby" sponge. Both these products contain oxalic acid which removes certain stains better than bleach. I would recommend trying that before scrapping the vents. (Plus, have you ever thought about PAINTING them?) Latest Update!

I thank everyone for their responses, I called Catalina Direct and spoke with Lowell, They do not have any. I had thought about painting but I prefer Not to. I do like the Barkeepers friend idea and will try that tonight and let you know. Again thanks for all your thoughts. Alan 87 Catalina 25 TR/SK #5612

Zud might be better

Just thought you might like to know. I went to Ace Hardware (True Value) and got Zud, which is a tiny bit more expensive than Barkeepers Friend, but I believe it is more concentrated with oxalic acid than the other. However, if you already HAVE the Barkeepers' Friend, then try it and it will give you some idea if it works. And I will readily admit... I got the information on cleaning those brown stains from guys on this great forum. Steve
