Sun Glasses

I & a lot of other middle aged sailors wear perscription glasses. I hate to wear contacts just so I can wear sunglasses. So I bought a pair of "Polar Eyes" wrap around sunglasses that are designed to fit over your existing glasses. They are dark, obviously polarized, are relativley cheap at $25 & can be bought at any Sams Club. I also like the wrap around feature that stops glare from getting in from around the frames at the corners. I have heard of sailors actually getting burned cornias from too much glare off the water in combination with wind. So no matter what the cost, its worth protecting your vision. When you don't strain from squinting you see better & I don't tire out as easily when I can actually see what's in front of me. My 2 c.

My choice is MJ. The main reason one wears sunglasses is to cut down on the UV rays entering the eye. If you wear the cheap ones, you iris thinks its dark out and it will dilate (open) to let more of the rays in which is exactly what you don't want! The MJ will block most of the rays coming in and it is one of the only brands that is non reflective on both sides of the lens so it cuts down on rays coming thru the lens or coming from the side. The idea is to see, of course, but the long term idea is to prevent glaucoma.

CHEAP!!! I've lost more than a few pair overboard along with hats, winch handles, tools and all sorts of other odds and ends.

I now have 2 pair of prescription bifocal sunglasses in about 300' of water in our local lake. So if you get an expensive pair, get a set of floaters for them as well. I now have a hi-viz float strap that looks goofy, but I usually wear it on the boat.

My latest set of prescription bifocals are Oakley's. They have a brownish tint that I really like. It works well in sunlight and brightens up everything on lower light cloudy days.

Ray-Ban Wayfarers

Current pair I have had for four years spent six months under a neighbor’s boat and about six weeks under the dock at the Yacht Club. All the barnacle parts come right off after soaking in vinegar. Just broke the eyepiece off last week so I am back to the ten year old pair.

For all those others who are cursed with presbyopia here is an excellent solution to the outrageous prices for reader sunglasses. Unfortunalty they are currently out of stock and unavailable.

Problem is, one company selling the remedy advertises a rugged sailor in a sailboat, only it's being towed with a back winded jib. The other is a proponent for his and hers bathtubs....

Walmart fishing dept. Polarized , full coverage of the eyes, $4.98. I love them. And the polarization must be med. to light becuse you can see your electronics screens really good.

What you have to worry about is the three stages of Alzheimer's.
First: The pronouns go.
Second: You forget to pull up you zipper.
Third: You forget to pull down your zipper.

I met a guy this weekend from the MDR Xmas parade, who lost a $300 pair of prescription sunglasses. He lost them the day before when his wife admits that they had a bit to drink. He was going into see if he could find them in about 8' of water. Just for entertainment I loaned him my dive mask. He tried for about a half hour before giving up.

On a bareboat trip to the BVI while moored at Norman Island one of the guys decided to throw one of the other guys off the side of the boat in ~60ft of water while wearing his prescription glasses. Not surprisingly, the glasses didn't come back up with him, and he didn't have any contacts with him.

I threw a line over the side with a heavy pot from the galley tied to it, with the line tied to the stanchion nearest to where he went over. I donned my scuba gear and about 30 min later came back to the surface with the glasses. The pot eventually dragged along the bottom creating an easy to see arc in the sand following the swing of the boat on the mooring. I searched along that arc and found the glasses roughly 2 feet away from the mark in the sand, they fell virually straight down.
