+ 1 on the Costa's, I love mine. Amber glass lens, the optics are fantastic, and no scratches after 6 years. The admiral always wore cheap sunglasses...didn't see the need to spend the $$$'s...as "they are just sunglasses". I convinced her to get a pair a couple years ago and she won't go back.
I can't read my instrument readouts with polorized lenses so they are out. I am with Stu. I break or lose my glasses all the time, so the cheaper the better as long as they give UV protection. I'm going down to the flea market in N Ft Myers tomorrow to buy a couple of pairs as I am down to only one pair right now.
Wife and I bought our first pair of Maui Jim's on our honeymoon back in 87 at a beach shack on the North Shore of Oahu. Been wearing MJ's ever since. Still have them all. I agree with noanker, I tend to take better care of them when I pay so much for them.
Wife bought a pair of prescription Costa's last June, the 580G lenses I believe. Expensive but she loves them.
I feel money spent for high quality lenses with maximum UV protection is well worth it if it prevents cataracts and other eye problems as I get older.
I'll be looking for the Maui Jim's with readers for this spring.

I give a thumbs up to Hobie sunglasses. I bought mine at the boat show 3 years ago and wear them exclusively for just about everything I do. I ran around to try on as many brands as I could find before I settled on them. They live in the car so I always have them. The comfort has not diminished in the slightest. I found them to be a better price than other more expensive glasses. The clarity is excellent, but I can't see the instruments with them on when looking at the wrong angle. Looking straight-on, they do alright with the instruments.
I have also had Native sunglasses that I preferred for skiing and another style of Native for biking. The glasses that I have for biking are very, very light and they suited that purpose perfectly (multiple lenses for the varying light conditions). Native makes a variety of special purpose sunglasses and they aren't so pricey as others, either.

Take a look at Barz glasses from Australia (www.barzoptics.com). Excellent watersport glasses, have versions with a reader insert that's NOT polarized so you can see displays, reasonably priced. Work really great and hold up well on a sailboat
I have a pair of Barz that I got at the boat show. Polarized lenses, with built in non-polarized readers. They are the best pair of sunglasses I have ever had. The non-polarized readers let me read the LCD screens on my instruments easily. An added bonus: they are great for the beach as I can read a book and avoid the glare at the same time.
I also like the Maui Jim's and Raybans, but there is no way I am spending that kind of money on sunglasses. They don't last long enough. I spent almost $80 for the Barz, and that is far and away the most expensive pair of sunglasses I ever bought. I usually buy the cheapest polarized lenses I can find. I rarely spend more than $20 for a pair. I lose, sit on or otherwise destroy glasses too often to drop a load of cash on them. I'd rather just throw away a scratched pair of cheap glasses than lament my decision to spend $200 for a pair of Maui Jim's that I just sat on.

I agree with Windward, the Maui Jim's are the best I have had.
I've had them for 12 yrs. now and they are great. A little heavy in weight what with the metal frames and glass lenses.
The pair I bought have 12 filtering layers in the lens and are designed for snow & water. At $350.00(OUCH), they've served me well.
I can look in direct sunlight, & have great penetration depth in water.
The only drawback is in low light conditions, they tend to be too dark.
However, I do have a fix for this........I just take them off.

I picked up a pair of Arsenal Optix (http://www.eyeking.com/brands/arsenal-optix.html) for $20 while out at Block Island this summer for Race Week, (broke the only pair I had with me on the ferry out there). The same company makes the Under Armour, Hobie, Crocs, and Maui and Sons sunglasses, I guess Arsenal is their "generic" brand?

Just to be clear Maui & Sons is not the same as Maui Jim. I only say this because when a newish sunglass company uses the word "Maui" they likely only have one reason for doing so, confusing the public....
Maui Jim manufactures their own lenses in their own lab/factory. They are not one of the "Luxottica" brands..... The only other other company owned by Maui Jim is Zeal Optics (ski goggles & sunglasses). At last check Zeal only offered polycarbonate lenses but they do borrow from the Maui Jim technology.
All I know that if it isn't glass, it's not as good.
Plastic type lens scratch easily and Iv'e had these.
But, don't listen to me, go out check them and see for yourself...........

I have Oakley with prescriptive lenses. They have poly type lenses are impact resistant and delivery incredible clarity and color. I use croakies to keep them from going overboard. Customer service from Oakley is excellent. They inadvertently bent the frames while changing lenses. When the store couldn't reshape them Oakley made a new pair and also gave me the misshaped ones. I put the croakies on the misshaped pair which made them fit just fine. They stay on the boat and the others at home. BTW while not cheap they weren't any more expensive than my previous pair from an eye glass store.

Own about 3 pairs of sunglasses. All from Zenni Optical. They have great frames and you can even 'try on' glasses and all measurements are given so you can know exactly what size the frames are. Best of all they are very inexpensive. They charged $4.95 extra to add tint to prescription eyeglasses and I paid around $50 for 3 pair of sunglasses.

Not sure if Hobie or Under Armour counts as a "newish company", but you're probably right about the rest....

Stu is right, the more expensive the faster they get gone. I wear Oakley's and I love them but I'm on my third pair. The first I left at a dockside bar in Southport, the second I lost in the water when I jumped in to get a puppy that was swimming out to sea, I was going to go with a cheaper pair but my wife bought me another pair of Oakley's. This is the third pair she has bought me.....I guess she loves me...or maybe I look hot in them........ok it's more likely the love thing...

Randolf engineering. Traditional designs, but best quality glasses ever. About the same price as Raybans, but better. And croakies! Or what ever you call the little stringy things that go around your neck.good insurance!
