Sump pump on BetaMarine BZ482

Hi everyone. I'm getting all excited about dropping the new engine into the Vega, but I've hit a little snag you might be able to help me with. My engine is one fitted with a sump pump, and this is located on the right hand side of the engine. As I'll be installing the engine in pretty much the "standard" way by adapting the mounts to the original beds I've found that the hydraulic hose connecting the pump to the sump will foul the bed, as the gap between the original beds is relatively narrow.

This isn't that big a deal as I think I can jiggle it around and tie it off here and there until it clears (just), but on reflection it almost looks as if the pump would be in a difficult to access position when installed on the Vega anyway. I guess the big question is should I just remove it altogether and install a drain plug on the sump instead? Again, the rear facing location of a sump plug will make it a bit awkward to get to (I think) so any pointers on the best course of action is much appreciated. Cheers - Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

My Beta arrived (from Steve Birch) fitted with a drain plug and no
pump. Draining the oil sump via the drain plug is awkward but doable.
Off the shelf automotive drain pans either don't fit or spill a little
oil (is there such a thing as a little oil) when you remove them
because you have to tip them back to slide them out from under the
engine. Still, by cutting and adapting through trial and error two
litre oil containers I've arrived at a design that allows me to make a
pretty clean and fast oil change. The fact that it's possible to
drain this marine engine in place at all with a sump drain plug still
impresses me.

I put in a Beta without the pump. Changing the oil is easy since there is
good access to the plug in front side of the pan and there is plenty of
clearance for a shallow collection pan. Really don't need the sump pump.

Hi All

I supply the Betas to vega owners worldwide. We do not have the oil sump
pump as there is plenty of room beneath the engine
to drain the oil during a service. This applies to Series II & III Vegas.

Series I Vegas have very little room and again are supplied without a pump.
The only way to drain the oil is with an electric pump
through the oilstick hole. Some Vega owners also have the shallow sump for
Series I Vegas but it is not needed.

Hope this helps. Any more infor needed then please contact me via

Hi Jeff

This is a common mistake with installing the Beta into a Series I Vega. Always best to have the Beta without the pump. Drop me a line on steve@... if you need anymore details.

I understand that some shipping lines, at least Matson, will take a boat on your trailer and deliver for you. The skipper who described the process had his boat shipped back from Hawaii to the west coast and said the boat was returned to him in perfect condition. A fairly common practice I guess, like a car on a ferry.

I have a friend who a Vega shipped on a trailer via container ship to the caribbean from the US. I don't know the details, but it can be done.

Hi Roger,

I looked into the possibility of shipping my Vega from France to Australia about 5 years ago and there are 2 options. The first and cheapest is by RO/RO (roll on roll off) the same way that cars are shipped, this way the Vega would have to be delivered to the port on a trailer. The second option is called “Out of Gauge” shipping when the cargo is over wide or over high to fit in a normal container. The cargo is shipped on a 40’ flat rack container, which has no sides or top (used for shipping heavy or overwidth cargo) the Vega would have to be on a cradle or possibly a trailer. The excess on price isn’t much more as the Vega is only a few inches outside standard size because of its width. A lot of companies can give you a quote for RO/RO or Out of Gauge shipping. Hope this helps. Cheers Chris/Vega339

One other option is Dockwise. It is a ship that is also a dry dock. They
bring the ship into a port and they basically sink it a number of feet. You
motor your boat in and they build a cradle around it and refloat the ship.
Then they take off for the next port. They do have a schedule of ports, so
it might not be the quickest or the cheapest. But you can actually stay on
your boat as it is being transported. They hook up a power cable to your
boat. Then you use the ship facilities and eat in their galley.

I used them for a bigger boat when I had to stop a cruise in Tahiti I was
on because of health reasons and ship the boat back to the states --
actually Vancouver Canada to be exact.

Even if you don't use them, their website is pretty cool:

Hi All,

Thanks for the info on the potential move.

and these are the costs:

1) Submersable boat, 15000 USD for the trip from Mayorca (I Still had to get there from gibraltar) to Sydney.
2) A special platform which had to be welded to the deck, €12,000.
3) Another welding platform, ,,,,,,,€13,000

So I guess I can not take my loved Ocean Sunrise, it is sad, very sad but if you know any one who might want an ocean crossing vessel, please let me know, it has a brand new main sail (not even out of the box, I thought we were going to sail around the world) a new number 3 (yep it does not has a rollerfurller).

The asking price is 4,900€ just the sails were 2,000€ (I forgot the amazing Spinnaker)..............................and they all have less than 40 nm usage :(

We hope for a great and worthwhile.

Cheers

Roger and Jas

Hi Roger,
No I didn’t send it, probably a mistake as a Vega here in good condition is worth good money. Are going to live in Aus?
The shipping cost in 2007 from Marseilles to Melbourne with MSF Linewas about US$6900 plus other charges and taxes could add up to another US$3-4000.

Yes I live in Melbourne, my sailing here is confined to Westernport near Melbourne in a mates 26’ Folkboat, (like a baby Vega)

Marina berths for 8-10m boats In the Melbourne area ranges from about A$3600 - 5000 pa. Sydney should be similar. You can get moorings on buoys for about A$400-500pa

The main area for sailing in Sydney is Sydney Harbour, which has a lot of smaller harbours off it like Middle Harbour etc. My favourite area is about 20 miles north of Sydney called Pittwater, which has several marinas and lots of moorings, lots of islands, estuaries, hot weather and quieter. If my boat was in Sydney it would definitely be at Pittwater.

Hope this helps, if you would like to contact me off group, I can give you more info, pics etc.
Cheers Chris

Subject: RE: [AlbinVega] Vega on a container

Hi Roger,
No I didn’t send it, probably a mistake as a Vega here in good condition is worth good money.

Hi Chris,

So I guess you did not send it? I am trying to send mine from Spain to Sydney coincidentally.

I notice your email address is in Oz, do you still do sailing? what are the mooring fees like? How much did they quote you?

Cheers

Roger

Subject: Re: [AlbinVega] Sump pump on BetaMarine BZ482
