Can anyone tell me if it is safe to store alcohol in any container other then the steel gallon can it comes in? I like my alcohol stove and do not want to change over to gas. Yes, I know that my stomach is a suitable container. Please try to refrain from the obvious jokes I have opened myself up to. Tim R.

I purchase stove alcohol . . .
at West Marine in plastic one gallon containers. I then store it under my sink on its side with the opening up and tightly capped. I've never had a spill, and the plastic container doesn't rust.

This is what I use...
If it is good enough for gas it is good enough for alcohol.. I use the 1-gallon size. Been using it for two years, stored under my galley sink. No spills, no smells, no rust...works for me.

alcohol fine in polyethylene
such as a gas jug. I hate the metal cans in that it is impossible to pour out of them. Even with a funnel the alcohol wants to run down the side of the can. I use a clear piece of small diameter plastic hose and start a siphon. You can see the alcohol and I never get any in my mouth. You might breath a few fumes but probably less than you do pouring it into a funnel and definately less than cleaning up a spill.

Try this
I use a quart plastic shampoo bottles, one of the major ingredients in the shampoo is alcohol. I have kept the stove alcohol in these bottles for over 2 years with out any problems or leaks. OR look for a bottle with the major ingredient of alcohol and use that, if it can store alcohol on the shelves than it should be ok. my $0.02

Nalgene Bottle...
You can buy Nalgene bottles at any decent camping/sporting goods store that are specifically designed for alcohol and other fuels. There are differnt size bottles and they come with a spout that is stored in the bottle upside down under the screw cap when not in use. Pretty handy. Good luck. Drew

Alcohol resistance
Most metals and resins are pretty resistant to ethyl alcohol (the major component of stove and denatured alcohol which also contain some methyl alcohol so you don't drink them). Polypropylene containers with a nylon, neoprene, or natural rubber seal are a good choice. Don't use polyethylene containers or silicon seals. Also don't use any brass fittings, but bronze would be alright. This is all taken just from a chemical compatability standpoint, actual safety of the container must also be assessed. Make sure you've got a good seal or your alcohol will magically disappear.
