This coming summer I want to sail / power from Long Beach, California to Santa Cruz Island, anchor for a yet to be determined number of days and return. I have articles and a video about anchorages on the island, but need suggestions on how to get there. I'm not limited on the number of days of the total voyage. I would prefer (though will if needed) to not voyage at night, even though I am adept at using radar and AIS. I have a "Code Zero" headsail mounted on roller furling on my bowsprit for downwind runs. I've thought of: 1. Long Beach to Catalina Harbor or Santa Barbara Island to Santa Cruz. 2. Long Beach to Marina Del Rey to Ventura to Santa Cruz. 3. Balls Out from Long Beach to Santa Cruz. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ken

If you are going to skip Catalina then Long Beach to MDR (guest slips). Then to Paradise Cove (nice anchorage and beach access.) Then on to Santa Cruz via Anacapa or Anacapa via Port Hueneme. From Port Hueneme short 10mi to Anacapa and day sail to Santa Cruz (Little Scopion Bay beautiful peaceful anchorage). Then to Painted Cave (One of the largest sea caves in the world. 100' wide x 100' high x 1/4 mii deep a must see and explore). The boat going into the cave is about a 30' fishing boat (pict 4). The last picture is him in the cave as far as he can go, but there is a smaller entrance beyond him. Take a good light it is pitch black in there. Then onto either Ventura Harbor or Santa Barbara. After that you are on your own. I'll add picts later and coordinates for anchorages later.

Paradise Cove 34° 1'11.66"N 118°47'4.79"W
Little Scorpion 34° 3'8.14"N 119°34'17.77"W
Painted Cave 34° 4'13.31"N 119°51'53.99"W

Lots of folks do your #2 route. Then maybe to Cat Harbor on the way back for variety (and code zero sailing).

I agree the sail from Santa Cruz to Cat Harbor would be a nice one given prevailing wind direction and swells.
The Trip to Santa Barbara Isand is not one I have done yet. I understand it is a day round trip and there are no really good andchorages there. There are some youtebe videos of the seal colonies there. I would love to dive with them some day.

Ken,

Santa Cruz island is a great sailing destination. I have been many times and have stayed n a variety of locations. Catch me on BB dock and I can give you my two cents worth.

Sounds like fun.

Am I missing something? A code 0 is a light air close reaching sail. With a short luff and and flat cut, they don't go downwind for crap.

Not DDW, more of a broad reach (as I recall).
