I took mine out and simply cleaned the vinyl floor. If the previous owner glued the carpet to the floor you'll be in for a bit of work...but the original white floor liner looks decent and is easy to maintain with basic cleaners such as 409 or simple green.

agree with Joe, we are going to remove the really awful carpet on our family cat27 (80). It has double sided tape and lots of residue to remove but I think I'd like to remove it all, clean it up and add a nice comfortable rug that stays in place, can be shaken out, adds warmth and comfort. We have it that way in our 30 and its very comfortable, clean and no tripping on the rug. On the 27 we removed the10 year old dri-dek from the cockpit (hated that stuff) and will be Kiwi Grip painting it soon. Seems that everything we cover (cockpit, cabin sole, just ends up looking and functioning worse. If we can't go all the way and put in something gorgeous and perfect fitting, I prefer clean and easy.:)

Ditto the above, mine had carpet also, but after a year my wife and I tired of the stains, dirt, and the frequent pulling back the carpet to get to the bilge. So we discovered a beautiful white floor, easy to clean and a nice bilge cover also. Amazingly, removal of the carpet and mat that was under it added another inch of headroom, which at 6'2, I need. If you did opt to cover the floor with some kind of press on laminate, it'll never bond and leave sticky goo everywhere you walk, usually barefoot. All the expensive matting that once was under my carpet now resides under where I park my car, that's how highly I think of it.;)

Our boat also had nasty carpeting.

I removed it and installed peal and stick faux mahogany vinyl planks. We got a leftover box from Lumber Liquidators for under $40.

It is pretty thin and bends to the contour of the hull, can be cut to fit with a simple utility knife and the texture feels good on bare feet. Pet friendly also.

Towards the bottom of page 4, (link here: http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=123450&page=4) You can see the snap in carpets I had made. Sent a pattern off and they made the pieces, even aligned the stripes from mat to mat. A previous owner had already installed snaps for fastening carpets, so that was an easy decision for me. Snaps came pre-installed and everything...

The carpets I had made were from an OEM carpet supplier to the marine industry, sort of a brother-in-law deal since I am a vendor to the marine industry, but I know others have the same capabilites.

I think the look of this carpet is really good on the interior. Kinda teak and holly looking sort of...

I bought a duplicate set of carpet panels for the companionway ladder. I figure that is the high-traffic locaiton. I also had them cut two boarding mats.

The stuff is run on a computer linearly, and based on standard width carpet rolls there is usually a fair amount of scrap. Your pattern will take "X" amount of length off of a roll. You will likely be charged "X" length times the width of the roll. Your material cost can sometimes be kind of fixed, as they can't do anything with the part of your total roll length not used; kinda like CNC-cut vinyl. So... with many custom-cut carpet houses, any material within that "X" length ideally should be turned into something. You pay for a fair anount of material regardless whether it gets bound or not, so doubling up on a few pieces adds a tiny bit of material cost, binding cost and labor. Total cost per square foot often slides downward up to the point where you use up a full width of a roll.
