Ross, thanks. I was wondering if was doing poorly by

going to my favorite auto parts store and getting some marine grease and saving $7.00 shipping. Apparently I've got you beat by 7 bucks.

I guess a man could use lard. Or Vaseline.
Come to think of it, there's a store in town here that advertises 'exotic lubricants'. I'm gonna have to check on that..

I had a girlfriend that insisted on Astroglide.

Personally, I had a hard time with it.

Try Shell Nautilus waterproof grease or Mobile XHP222 grease.

Jviss, it would be next to impossible to get an

authoritative answer to the difference between the OEM stuff and the generic. Absent that, I would look to the service manual and read it exactly and I mean the exact wording for a clue.

See post #3 where I quote the manual.

Jviss, I was thinking about the entire context but

rereading it the fact that they specify "Lubriplate" and that it is a multipurpose MARINE grease if it were me I'd use the Sta-Lube. I happen to like Sta-Lube anyway. I agree too that on a boat it is nice to have fewer items to do the same thing

With a lot of automotive fluids nowadays they actually add an additive to the OEM stuff and it will be better. Sometimes not. Ticks me off because the OEM stuff always costs a lot more but I'll use it until I am confident that a generic is equivalent. In a manual there is a big difference between saying "use" and "use only" for instance.

Common sense and experience tell me to use marine grease on a boat. Just try washing it off your hands with plain soap and water. I don't know why people balk about using it rather than standard automotive grease. Sorry Bill.

Good thread, I like you conclusion.
