Styrofoam in the storage compartments??

A previous owner put large styrofoam blocks (like 12" x 12") into several of the interior storage compartments...

Why would he do that? A racing thing?

I'm going to get rid of them....

Won't do anything to get the boat a little "higher above the waterline" except to maybe keep his wife from putting stuff in the compartment.
Weight is weight - How much does 10 pounds of feathers weigh? In a storage compartment its just weight and doesn't contribute to reducing displacement.

Maybe he wanted to "add reserve floatation" in case the boat started to sink? It would only affect floatation once it was submerged (thereby not allowing water to take up the space), not while inside a dry boat.

It's insulation. For whatever he stored in the cabinet. Insulation also helps lower humidity...stablizing range of temp changes.

It may be positive flotation to satisfy a requirement for an event. I know that regatta's sometimes require it especially youth regattas. That is the only thing I can think of that makes sense.

Thanks Mark... Makes sense.

I swear these blocks were put in at the factory when the hull was made. The blocks are bigger than the storage compartment opening. The only way I can get it out of there is to break it up into pieces. Not only that but they fit in fairly perfectly.

Weird.

People think strange things about safety, and perhaps they were afraid of sinking. One thing to remember, expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) burns and in a non-pleasant, sticky, smoke will kill you, type of way. Not really safe to have it lying about.

Google boat flotation requirements and there is a lot of information about coast guard rules and standards. Recommend you do this research before removing any.

It could’ve been from the factory or added later using expanding foam. That would allow whoever the installer was to make it conform to the space very closely without needing to fit through the entrance.

Too late... I've already cleared out the v-berth compartment.

But I seem to be the only C22 owner on these forums that has this in their boat...?

And as flotation, we would be talking about if the boat fills with water, right? So it would float rather than sink?

I don't know... I really want my storage compartments

That’s correct. It would only have an affect if the foam is underwater. It’s not as simple as it seems to add foam properly, so if it was a previous owner mod it may or may not have been done right. The floatation will try to hold the boat up (if submerged), so it needs to be held in by stronger structure than you might expect.

Definitely not expanding foam. These are square blocks of industrial-strength styrofoam, about 12" x 12" x 15". Large enough so I can't get them out of the storage compartment opening. Really odd.

I pulled all this out of Daydream when we first got her home. PO had packed it into various lockers and screwed down the lids. He was afraid of sinking in the tiny mountain lake where he sailed.
