i have a 22 foot oday.i use it for coastal cruising.boston to cape ann north of boston.i have found a stash of styrofoam below the cockpit molding and in the bow under the berths.i assume for buoancy in the event of the worst.is it unheard of to remove all this for extra storage space and ventilation.its my second season and wanna go little further.

Louie: I would not recommend removing the flotation from your boat simply to obtain additional storage space. The very reason you want to obtain aditional storage space (i.e., extending your cruising range) is the very reason I would recommmend against removing it. Also, I suspect you may want to move up to a larger boat at some point and a potential buyer may not take favorably to your removal of whatever buoyancy the designer/builder placed in the boat. While there are always some modifications one can reasonably make to a boat - this would not be one of them!

Leave that foam in there. It is one of the things which makes your boat one of the safer ones out there. As Bruce mentioned, that positive flotation is a considerable selling point. I recent sold my O'22, and it was a significant advantage to just about all the potential (and eventual) buyer. Brad

Leave that foam where it is... having the extra corned beef sandwich and diet coke that you were able to store up there with that extra space will be of little comfort. Beautiful place to sail by way!
