Stupid Previous Owner Tricks

In a recent thread on stupid builder tricks, robertsapp suggested this one.

Here's mine:

My PO did a really dumb thing, I just discovered (after 13 years!): He "cleverly" placed a U-bolt through the cockpit floor just in front of the binnacle for use to clip a harness to. Unfortunately, the bolts come down in the front piece of the cover over the idler pins and sheaves down below in the aft cabin!!! A few scant inches forward and it wouldn't be an issue to simply unscrew the idler wheel cover.

When we bought the boat the PO proudly showed it off, too.:cussing:

Just because one can pick out a drill or saw doesn't mean they able to use them and Common sense isn't all that Common. Fair winds,

Better way would of been to replaced the bolts in the binnacle mount with eye bolts to clip into.

Oh yeah. I cuss every time I see a metal screw, nut, washer, hose clamp, etc on a boat.
A small magnet in the tool box will help anyone that can't visually tell the difference between S/S and zinc plating.

The hard way

I discovered the hard and expensive way, that the PO had installed non SS cotter pins in the clevis pins on standing rigging. NEVER assume anyone else has common sense or knowledge.

True some can't tell the difference but stainless fasteners can be magnetic.

From allowing the water in the batteries to run out (causing me to have to replace the batteries) to allowing a leak through the chain plate to continue so long that the bulkhead it was attached to had to be replaced -- you name it. My previous owner takes the cake.
