Stupid Boom Vang Question

I get it that the boom vang is used to affect twist in the mainsail by controlling tension on the boom thereby tightening/loosening the main leech. Now, here is my stupid question. Should you adjust vang tension by hand only or is it ok to tension the vang using the coachtop winch?

Much depends on whether or not you have a soft or a rigid vang, since most soft vangs have a 4:1 purchase, while our rigid vang has 6:1 or more.

My experience is that you could well bend your boom if you use a winch.

I only adjust by hand as the winch power when multiplied by Vang could damage something or pull loose from the deck.

By hand. The vang is useful for a whole range of sail trim, not just twist in the leech.

I`m getting ready to start learnin` mine this weekend. First boat had none, this one has one still living below. Plan to rig and tug on it this weekend and see just what happens!!
