stumped on 27 deck drains

1984 Hunter 27! Were starboard and port deck drains stock? They sit about three to four feet from the stern between the cockpit and toe rail. Mine are rotten and I am having a very hard time replacing them. I found a 3/4 in deck scupper at West Marine that is flanged and it just doesn't fit right. It has about a 1/4 edge which I could make a gasket out of Butyl Tape or something else I guess, but would not be happy with it. The deckside hole is 3/4 and the thru hull is 1/2. I thought about just having all four holes glassed over????

Not sure what to do. West marine was no help. They told me to go to Home depot and start drilling holes. Home Depot said not to because the fiberglass would crack. I may just take a hacksaw to original nylon hardware and try and clean it up enough to salvage it with a new hose of course.

I don't think those are stock (didn't have anything like that on our H27), or why they would be needed. Do they just drain out an above water thru-hull?

Yep, about a foot of hose and out the side. You might have similar one in ur chain locker. I do.

The drains are stock, I replaced mine years ago. Sorry I don't have pictures but they were standard off the shelf through hulls. Worst marine should have everything thing you need, otherwise check out defender. You could go with brass, stainless, or marelon if you want, but since these are above the waterline you can use the regular plastic type.
If that picture is either what is there currently or what you are trying to replace it with, it wont work. A regular mushroom head through hull is fine. It will sit in the recess and be flush with the deck height.

I have them on my 1982 H-30 but there is a depressions (dimple) in the deck to accomidate the drain and allow the water to dran down rather than running aft. There is an exit thru hull about 1 foot down on the hull (well above the water line) to drain. They are a pain becaue they are alwaus getting clogged. I don't see that they make a lot of difference except maybe to keep stains off the stern next to where the toe rail ends where the water runs off the deck.

My 1978 H-27 did not have them.

Based on the different responses, I guess they were something added on the later year models. I still don't see a real purpose for them though, other than to be another source of water infiltration into the cabin

Thanks Manny! I went to Worst Marine and they treated me like crap! They didn't have a clue so were telling me to drill holes in my boat and all kinds of crap. That was a picture of a deck fitting I was gonna try and use with a bevelled edge, but as you can see, it was raised up about a quarter of an inch. So your saying just use a regualr thru hull and will will seal flat? Since there shouldn't be any movement, I will prob just use 4200 for seal. It's weird because the top hole is 3/4 and side thru hull is 1/2, so I will have to use a reducer (one more thing to leak). So I will install 3/4 thru hull in deck with 4200, use 3/4 female to 1/2 hose barb to 1/2 thru hull with 1/2 hose harb sealed with 4200 (all above water line). Please let me know if anything sounds wrong and thanks for the help! I will post picks when done.

On second thought, I think I will use stainless or bronze. Both of the drains I replaced and the one in the chain locker were all broke off at the top of the threads (deck fitting). I couldn't figure it out an thought it was a thru hull that they used a hack saw and cut the mushroom off. Now, I bet the plastic got brittle and were kicked and broke off over time!!!! Its all making sense now!

I found some pictures that may help

The original deck through hulls on mine were a mushroom type through hull (i'm assuming they were original). So there will always be a little space around the head of the through hull around the indentation that will trap a little water, just seal the through hull properly and it's not an issue. Otherwise the head will be at deck level anyway. The hull side through hull, after looking at these pictures I found, I remembered that it is the type that is an elbow with one side barbed and the other threaded. The heads are threaded and there are two of them, an interior and exterior head. You can install the through hull from the inside and thread the head on from the outside. You may be able to see that in the picture. I replaced them with the identical item (I tried checking defender's site but couldn't find them). Frankly it doesn't matter what you use as long as it has the 90 degree bend.

One thing, both the deck and hull through hulls were and still are for the same size hose. I don't know why you want it to be different. Using a reducer will another spot in that items can get clogged in.

Looks like they would work, and if the curve is gentle enough on the hose, it would probably minimize clogging.

I have some good flexible hose that u can about put in 90 and it wont kink. We shall see, I may just go to WM and get plastic, so I cant get it done and move onto the diesel work that needs to be done I can just use the thru hulls with the 90 I took off, if I clean them up real well.

I have been reading this forum and wondered if you have considered drilling some extra holes at the base of the vertical side of the toe rail.

I put the holes only where the water was collecting .....(not a lot)....seems to work.

I really didn't want to drill and realized existing drains were just mushroom head thru hulls that were eventually kicked or broken off the threads. I found some very low profile stainless steel drains that go to 3/4 hose barb! Will work perfect! Should be here this weekend. Now I have to figure out if I want to seal with 4200 UV, 4200, or butyl tape. These will not move and won't stick up enough to get kicked, so will prob go with 4200 since I already have a tube

Done and couldn't be happier! West Marine was no help, but a local shop in Portland really came thru and hooked me up with the flush stainless drains. They were like $6 more each and worth every penny! After inspecting the old drains, the plastic got brittle and the tops cracked off of the threaded pipe. Won't be issue with stainless.

Nice looking upgrade with the stainless ones. I'd need the recessed circle to add them to my boat. My dad bitched the whole summer of 1976 to our hunter dealer that water stood on deck at that spot on our new h30. Maybe it worked.
