I have a significant leak from my stuffing box. Does anyone know what size the nut is. I plan to try to fix this tomorrow, but forgot to check on the size of the nut. If I have to buy a wrench, I'd like to pick it up on the way to the marina.

stuffing box wrench

I don't know the exact size however you will need two wrenches to loosen the stuffing box. I have two adjustable wrenches that I purchased at a plumbing supply house ($8 each) that work well. You might check Defenders catalog or another supplier to see what they look like but you can also get them at Home Depot. You can also use pipe wrenches or a large pair of adjustable pliers.I am quessing the size is between 1 1/2 inch and 2 inches.Hope this helps sorry can't be more exact.

Buy good ones.

I would like to see Pete's wrenches. I have an adjustable and it is almost useless. They are necessarily thin and mine will not keep it's adjustment. Two like the one in the Related Link is what I will get. And I think that size is correct for my boat at least(2 and 5/16"). The problem with a thick wrench like a pipe wrench is there may not be room. If the locknut is close to the stern tube then the wrench will have to overlap the stuffing box. On mine it catches the box when turning the nut. I use visegrips on the shaft and let it hit the hull to stop the shaft from turning. Then my one thin wrench works once I get the size locked in.

Can't help with the size, but....

I got tired of trying pipe wrenches, not enough room for a large adjustable, etc. The best deal I found was an item called a "pump wrench" available through McMaster-Carr. They have short handles and comes in a wide variety of sizes. Once you know your size, these are the way to go. Cost is about $18 each. Use the attached link and search for pump wrench. They usually deliver in less than a week. The 30 deg. angle wrenches come in the larger sizes that you will probably need.
