Stuffing Box
There are no replies thus far so I'll give you my definition. A stuffing device is a mechanical seal where a shaft of some sort passes thru a hull, usually under water. These are commonly found on the propeller shaft and sometimes on the rudder post. The purpose is to allow the shaft to turn and yet keep the water out. The older types contain several wraps of fiber or PTFE cord. A large sealing nut is tightened, compressing the cords around the shaft and thus limiting the amount of water that seeps in around the shaft. Newer types rely on a different design and are "dripless". You might know the stuffing box that is found on your outdoor hose faucets. You tighten the little nut that surrounds the faucet shaft to stop leaks.
